Exploring insects in Early Childhood Education sparks natural curiosity and builds foundational skills in science, mathematics, and literacy. Hands-on bug exploration transforms outdoor spaces into active learning environments, fostering empathy, patience, and early environmental stewardship.
Our tamariki have been absolutely obsessed with bug hunting lately. We had a fun filled bug day, hunting for bugs, face painting bugs and coloring in bug pictures.

Bubble foam sensory play is a powerful, low-cost activity in early childhood education that builds nerve connections and sharpens motor skills. The lightweight, non-threatening texture of bubble foam helps tamariki (children) develop essential physical, cognitive, and emotional skills while keeping them deeply engaged.
Our tamariki had so much fun, exploring the bubble foam. They watched as the dishwahing liquid turned into the foam texture and got bigger. The bubble foam opened up a world of creativity and exploration for our tamariki. Encouraging them to come up with scenarios and different ways to use the foam.
Our Tamariki are loving taking care of our bunny Willow. They enjoy helping with ensuring she has all the right food, enough water and always showing her love. Willow loves when our tamariki go and sit by her cage, talk to her and see how her day is going. Having Willow helps our tamariki, when they need some time just to sit and reflect. You regularly will see one or two of our tamariki by her cage, telling her stories or just simply watching her eat.
School readiness in Early Childhood Education equips children with foundational skills—like emotional regulation, following instructions, and independence. These benefits ensure a smooth transition to primary school, build lifelong learning confidence, and prevent students from falling behind in early literacy and numeracy.
We tailor our readiness for school program, based on each child's individual skills. These tamariki are working ok following the lines, with their pens.
Learning how to draw lines straight, acts as a primary bridge to early literacy, strengthens essential motor and cognitive skills, and gives young children an accessible medium to communicate their thoughts and emotions.
We also looked at shapes , identifying them and then following the lines and learning how to draw them.
Being so close to Maygrove Park, has its advantages. It opens up opportunities for quick excursion to the park, so some of our tamariki can enjoy the playground. Being able to go to the playground, helps to break up the week and give our tamariki something else to explore. Our tamariki had so much fun spending the morning at the playground, we cannot wait to do it again and have a picnic.
Climbing domes provide a highly versatile, open-ended 3D play experience that supports holistic child development across physical, cognitive, and social-emotional domains. Unlike traditional linear playground structures, a geodesic climbing dome challenges children to move in multiple directions (up, down, sideways, and diagonally), which maximizes engagement and learning in Early Childhood Education environments.
With the help of one of our Kaiako, this awesome climbing was built last week for our tamariki. They were all so excited to watch the process of it being built, checking in with the Kaiako to see how the build was going and whether they could play on it yet. The excitement was clearly too much to bare, that once it was ready. Everyone was on the dome swing, climbing and giggling. All the hard for of putting the frame together, seeing our tamariki love and enjoy it was all worth it.
Gymnastic rings in Early Childhood Education offer play-based development. They build upper body strength, enhance grip and coordination, and foster confidence. Hanging and swinging provide essential vestibular and proprioceptive input, which is critical for physical and cognitive growth.
Our tamariki were super excited for the new additions to our playground. Especially the gymnastics rings, they love being able to swing and twirl. While feeling the wind in their hair and feeling like they are flying. This new addition, give us the ability to change out our swing and make it fun an interesting for our tamariki.
Being so close to the local community , is something very special to Sunflowers. Being able to take a walk to visit things in our local area, always makes for a fun and interesting day.
One thing we sometimes like to take advantage of, is that the local library is a short walk from the centre. Our tamariki got to enjoy this magical adventure , to our local library . For music and story time, this was the highlight of the week for our tamariki and something we would love to do again.
Our tamariki really enjoyed, when we come up with new and creative learning experiences. They really enjoyed rescuing the animals, from the gloopy sand. Figuring out which tool work best, to rescue the animals from the gloop. While having fun exploring the different textures and make up of the gloop.
Gloop helps with engaging the touch receptors, develops fine motor skills, supports early science (cause and effect), encourages language development, and provides a calming effect for children.
Sensory painting in early childhood education is a powerful, hands-on activity that accelerates brain development. By engaging sight, touch, and smell, it helps children build crucial neural pathways, enhances fine motor skills, and provides a safe outlet for emotional expression and self-regulation.
We love setting up sensory painting activities, outside for our tamariki. They love exploring the different textures and manipulating the different colors and textures. Open ended painting experiences, help our tamariki to tap into their creative minds and come up with some beautiful artwork.
