Princes Street is back! The busy little hands of our tamariki were overjoyed last week to get stuck back in to the huge range of activities on offer at Princes Street Childcare.
The team have been overwhelmed with feedback from whanau saying that tamariki are happy, settled, and sleepy after their return to routine and some level of normalcy.
Our whole whanau are having a wonderful time here and so happy to be able to provide our tamariki with routine, education, and comfort after this unsettling period.

Meri Kirihimete from Princes St Childcare! Our teachers would like to share the wonderful christmas tree made by the Tamariki to bring Christmas Cheer to our hallway:
"During this festive season, our children have been celebrating through various ways. One of these ways is through visual arts, where children not only celebrated this festive season but also got the opportunity to contribute. This was as they created their own beautiful christmas decorations which were put together to create our very own wall Christmas tree! What a fun, creative and joyous experience and way to celebrate this festive season! The children really enjoyed decorating their own plates!"

Sharing our learning
At Princes Street our Tamariki and teachers love sharing the learning that happens, while they have fun playing with the toys and resources we provide and create. Here's an example of a wonderful activity set up by one of our teachers. Read below for her explanation of the learning happening here.
"Exploring letters: This learning experience was a fantastic way for children to work alongside each other and experience learning through a new and exciting form. This experience empowers children to learn early literacy through play. This is a great way to recognise and identify letters. This learning experience also stimulates children to further develop their hand and eye coordination and fine motor skills, as they use the playdough to form and morph letters."

"Exploring transportation:
our tamariki have been exploring different modes of transportation as this was a strong interest. From this observation I decided to make a resource which would extend on this interest. The resource I made covered a wide range of transportation forms such as air, water and road transportation.
To further empower children, I created different modes of transportation vehicles such as boats and submarines for water transportation, cars, trucks and bicycles for road transportation and airplanes and hot air-balloons for air transportation.
Using these resources, children would be encouraged to match which transportation mode goes with which transportation vehicle."

Matariki at Princes Street:
The children enjoyed learning and celebrating Matariki last week, learning about the seven stars and their names and reading books about Matariki at mat time.
They all learned valuable lessons a very important parts of New Zealand's history and culture.
And of course - they had fun making stars!

At the heart of our values - this quote has been cherished here for as long as we can remember.
A brief glimpse into why we hold this value strong: "The New Zealand Curriculum is quite clear in its vision of developing young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners."

On a blog about early childhood education in bilingual children, I came across this quote.
Ignatio Estrada is part of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a Foundation that produces grants in the name of "improvement" in a range of fields.
This phrase by Estrada has been coined a "pearl of pedagogical wisdom", and a philosophy followed by many.
What you might see as 'free play' at Princes St is our teachers embodying this. We have a broad range of students from hugely diverse backgrounds, many of whom do happen to be bilingual.
Learning is different for every one of our Tamariki, but it doesn't have to be harder for anyone. Guided play and engaging activities set up by teachers who know each child well allow our Tamariki to learn the way they learn best.
