Amazing achievements of the St Mary's music girls! Great Work Isla!

New students already reaping the benefits of the Pettman Academy

The Pettman National Junior Academy always welcomes new talented young musicians to the programme. This week we feature pianist Isla Renker-Darby who joined the PNJA at the start of this year. Isla, aged 16 and a student at St Mary’s College, Auckland, is taught by Sarah Watkins and is currently working towards the Pettman Chamber Music Competition that is taking place this month.

Isla Renker-Darby was one of several new students admitted into the Pettman Academy at the start of the year. Although she’s only been with the academy for a few months it’s clear that she’s already taking advantage of the wide variety of opportunities the programme has to offer. Certainly, she seems to be enjoying the experience: “I find the Saturday morning programme really good. It opens up lots of opportunities especially when it comes to performing. I like the musicology classes and the performing classes, I learn a lot of new ideas from them. I especially look forward to the Pettman masterclasses”. Isla is presently working with fellow PNJA students towards a performance of the Piano Trio No. 2 for flute, cello and piano, Op. 87, by the American composer Lowell Liebermann. On the benefits of the ongoing chamber music programme with the PNJA Isla comments: “I enjoy working with different tutors, gaining new ideas and learning their different opinions. It’s really helpful to my development as a musician”.

Outside the Pettman Academy, Isla is performing as often as possible and entering various competitions. In June 2019, she advanced to the final round of the Auckland section of the NZCT Chamber Music Competition with the group ‘Mental Notes’. Isla has also given performances on several occasions at the South Auckland Performing Arts Competition, winning the Jean Y. Phillpotts Trophy Class in 2015 in the Sonatina/Sonata category. This year she will compete in the recital class of the competition and will perform J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue no. 12 as part of her programme. Whilst not entirely sure of the direction her career will take just yet, Isla has some aspirations to study music at tertiary level, most likely at the University of Auckland. The idea building a career as a piano accompanist interests her greatly at the moment, and her interests lie in the collaborative piano discipline, one that combines piano performance, accompaniment and education. Isla’s favourite composers at present are Debussy and Mozart and she hopes to incorporate some more of their music in future concerts and recitals.

From the Pettman Academy’s point of view it's fantastic to see new students like Isla taking such a keen interest not only in her individual piano lessons but also getting involved in other aspects of the programme such as the musicianship classes, chamber music ensembles and masterclasses. We’re sure that we will hear plenty more about Isla’s musical achievements over the coming years.
