The New Zealand Music Commission Schools Programme brings music industry professionals into schools

It's been a busy first week of NZ Music Month! We've kicked off mentoring at Manurewa High School and Alfriston College with Mazbou Q in Tāmaki Makaurau, Emily Rice (Aro) at Te Kauwhata College in Kirikiriroa, Jed Parsons and Hera with Te Tihi-o-Maru schools, Roncalli College, Timaru Boys' High School - authorised page & Timaru Girls' High School.

We're excited to announce applications for the 2023 Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme are open now!

Through this programme students and teachers can benefit from the advice and experience of professional musicians from the NZ music industry. Our Mentors have a range of expertise which we try to match to your learning goals and your students.
The programme is designed for around 60 schools per year, ten hours each, free of charge. All our mentors are police-vetted.

We would love to work with your kura in 2023 and invite you to apply now.

Hope everyone has had a wonderful summer break and welcome to the new year! Our 2022 Musicians Mentoring in Schools' programme is now LIVE for application. It will close February 21, so get your applications in 🙂

Through this programme students and teachers can benefit from the advice and experience of professional musicians from the NZ music industry. Our Mentors have a range of expertise which we try to match to your learning goals and your students. The programme is designed for around 60 schools per year, ten hours each.

Applications are open until February 21st at which time they are analysed in balance with our responsibilities for fairness of resourcing, for diversity of regions, a balance of urban and rural, and for a spread of deciles.

There is no cost to your school other than for a reliever. This reliever allows a teacher to be present at the Mentoring sessions.

A big thank you to the New Zealand Choral Federation for running the Kids Online Singalong 2021 project. The final compilation video is now available.

Featuring 588 children from 16 primary and intermediate schools around the country singing and signing "Aroha I Aotearoa," composed by 14-year-old Anna Feillet from Otago Girls’ High School, the winner of this year's Hook, Line & Sing-A-Long competition.

Our Education Manager is moving to an exceptional teaching opportunity, so the Music Commission is looking for a dynamic and energetic person with a background in music education to fill this role. A wide and varied knowledge of New Zealand music is absolutely essential.

The key responsibilities of the Education Manager are:

Managing the Music Commission’s contract with the Ministry of Education to deliver the Musicians Mentoring in Schools and Bands Mentoring in Schools programmes.

Advocacy for contemporary popular music for young people and liaison with other music education offices and organisations.
It is a permanent 0.8 – 1 FTE role based in central Auckland due to commence in late September 2021, but is flexible for the right candidate.

Record number of mentoring sessions happening around Aotearoa today after the Easter weekend! We have 7 Mentors in Schools today with Jimmy Colbert at Kerikeri High School, Lavina Williams at Bream Bay College, julia deans at Sacred Heart Girls' College, New Plymouth, Jeremy Redmore at Outoemotai, Ben King at Liston College, Thomas Oliver at Wairarapa College and Jenny Mitchell at St Hilda's Collegiate School.

In collaboration with Auckland Live, is proud to announce the launch of the Young Gig Makers Grant | He Taiohi Kaiwhakarite Kaupapa⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The initiative is set to support young and aspiring music event organisers and musicians with a micro-grant of cash plus in-kind technical support and equipment to present an all-ages concert or music performance in the Auckland region. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The grant is designed to ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- provide opportunities for access and participation in music events for young people⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- reflect the culture and character of Tāmaki Makaurau⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Raise awareness of Auckland UNESCO City of Music⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
