Many cannot identify parts of their bodies in a mirror. Even if they know they have a nose, when asked to point to it, they’ll put a finger on, say, an ear instead.

Mothers often tell me that this disconnect was the first clue that something was wrong with their child.

Children with FDS (Functional Disconnection Syndrome – meaning the two hemispheres of the brain are not electrically balanced) seem to lack a kind of internal map that normal children develop in their first few years.

This lack of self-image is also at the root of another prominent symptom: poor socialization.

The right brain is about seeing the big picture of the world and the left brain, the smaller parts- the details.

The left brain is the gas. It controls the small muscles or fine motor skills. It is the curious hemisphere and is involved in every conscious movement. It is also the verbal side where our speech, language and learning occur. The left brain loves routine and is in charge of our positive emotions. It also helps to control the immune system.

The right brain is the brake, the cautious hemisphere. It controls movement of the big muscles, our posture and gait. It's the spatial side of the brain and allows us to feel our body in space. It governs balance and our proprioceptive sense. It is in charge of avoidance behaviour and keeps us safe. It controls our negative emotions and impulses. It is our non-verbal communicator which is about reading body language and social cues.

By understanding what each hemisphere of the brain looks after, we can gauge whether a child has a left or right brain deficiency- where one side of the brain is underactive and being overpowered by the other.

By stimulating the underactive hemisphere, we can help it develop and become more equal to the other hemisphere. This is critical for efficient processing between the two hemispheres and for the brain to ultimately be in balance.

They are necessary, expected, and desirable. As in normal brain development, the child will experience the behavior and eventually pass through it. And here’s the good news:

Your child will usually go through these stages rather quickly. A year’s worth of “catchup” may actually only take a few weeks.

This means that all behavior changes— both good and bad— that you
see while going through the Melillo Method are a sign of positive change in the brain.

As a child’s brain neurology starts to change as we stimulate growth, behavior definitely does change and what that behavior will be depends on where the deficits are, the severity of the deficits, and the child’s age.

If all the dysfunctions in the brain are not corrected, the symptoms will return and the problem will continue. Each function must be addressed one at a time.
