Today, our Pukeko Room tamariki had a very special visit from two police officers! 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️
The tamariki enjoyed an exciting and hands-on learning experience focused on Road Safety and understanding traffic lights. The officers talked with the children about staying safe around roads and explained what the different traffic lights mean. 🚦

The tamariki were also curious to learn about the different items police officers carry on their uniforms. The officers demonstrated how these items are used and gave the children the opportunity to wear police vests and caps. 👮‍♀️🧢

The excitement continued outside, where the tamariki explored the police car. The officers demonstrated some of the important features inside the vehicle and talked about equipment they carry with them, including the first aid kit, police radio and other essential safety equipment.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our tamariki to learn through real-life experiences, exploration and meaningful interactions with members of our community. These experiences support tamariki to develop confidence, communication skills, an understanding of their wider community and knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe.

This learning connects beautifully with Te Whāriki, particularly Mana Atua – Wellbeing, as tamariki develop knowledge and confidence around keeping themselves safe, and Mana Whenua – Belonging, as they build connections with people and services within their community. 🌿❤️

A huge thank you to our wonderful police officers for spending time with our Pukeko Room tamariki and making road safety learning so engaging and memorable! 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️🚓💙

🌿 Pukeko Room Transition Visit to Mangere East Primary School – 25 August
Today, seven tamariki and two teachers from our Pukeko Room enjoyed a wonderful transition visit to Māngere East Primary School. It was a lovely day filled with learning, exploring, creativity and lots of fun! 💛

The tamariki began their visit by learning alphabet sounds with Mrs Peram, tracing letters on activity sheets and practising their early literacy skills. They then watched a video about brushing teeth and drew the different steps involved in brushing, supporting their understanding of healthy self-care routines. 🪥🦷

After their learning activities, the tamariki enjoyed some child-led play with the classroom toys and LEGO, using their imagination, creativity and problem-solving skills. They then headed outside, where they had a fantastic time climbing on the monkey bars, swinging and exploring the outdoor play area. 🛝😊

This experience supported the tamariki to become familiar with the school environment, build confidence in a new setting, develop relationships and experience the joy of learning through play.

🌱 Te Whāriki connections:

Mana Atua | Wellbeing: Developing healthy self-care practices and confidence in a new environment.
Mana Whenua | Belonging: Becoming familiar with the primary school environment and developing a sense of belonging.
Mana Reo | Communication: Exploring alphabet sounds, early literacy and expressing ideas through drawing.
Mana Aotūroa | Exploration: Building, climbing, swinging, investigating and developing confidence through active play.
Mana Tangata | Contribution: Participating alongside others, sharing resources and engaging positively in a new learning community.
A wonderful transition experience for our Pukeko tamariki! 🌈💚

🌺🇹🇴 Celebrating Tongan Language Week in Pukeko Room! 🇹🇴🌺
What a wonderful and meaningful week our Pukeko Room tamariki have had celebrating Tongan Language Week! ❤️🤍

Our tamariki enjoyed a variety of fun, hands-on activities while learning about Tongan language, culture and traditions. We learned some basic Tongan words and practised counting from 1–10 in Tongan. The children also got creative making Tongan flags using red and white paper. 🇹🇴

We made beautiful Tongan kiekie using paper feathers, which the tamariki coloured themselves, along with artificial feathers attached to ribbon. We also created Tongan canoe collages using paper cut-outs and natural dried leaves. 🛶🍃

To finish our celebrations, we made ‘Otai, a traditional Tongan drink. The tamariki enjoyed learning about the ingredients and talking through the method of making it. We also had a special dress-up day, where the children proudly wore Tongan outfits and celebrated the beauty of Tongan culture. 🌺👗

And of course, we ended our celebrations with plenty of fun! The tamariki enjoyed time on our bouncy castle and treated themselves to some delicious, freshly made organic ice cream. 🍦🎉

A big mālō ‘aupito to our wonderful tamariki for embracing the week with such enthusiasm, creativity and joy! ❤️🤍🇹🇴

Mālō e lelei! 🇹🇴🌺
