Our Karekare preschoolers are continuing to learn about occupations. One of our Dad’s came and shared part of their building work with the tamariki. “Measure twice, cut once” right? Learning about the wider community is always an interest with our tamariki, and you can’t beat real life learning.

What a beautiful week celebrating with our tamaiti, aiga and faia’ogo. We are blessed to have passionate Pasifika people supporting authentic learning for all our tamaiti across the centre. Arts, crafts, dance, songs, food, history and heritage, play and support for learning through new experiences.

Road Safety Week is an important one on our calendar. We are so lucky to have Constable Claudia who comes to see us every year. She brings her patrol car and police uniforms for us to test out. We enjoyed mat time talking about how police can help us and Constable Claudia also let us know how important it is that we wear our seatbelts and sit properly in our car seats.

Opportunities to revisit learning come in many different ways. In our Muriwai Room at the moment, the tamariki are enjoying photo displays at their level on the windows. Kaiako have made the collage of their recent adventure to Kiwi valley. The tamariki love taking the time to find their photos, point out their friends, their parent helpers from the trip, and the animals. It has been a busy spot in the learning space.

It’s early numeracy and it’s fun. Our Piha tamariki have been really interested in pattern, shape, geometry and Kaiako Sue has a specific interest in numeracy and literacy for preschoolers. This has lead to loads of table top experiences sparking interests in mathematical concepts through play. By making numeracy part of play everyday tamariki are able to build on concepts and knowledge setting them up for later when they get to “big school”.

Looks like we have some scientists on the loose. . . Science in ECE fosters natural curiosity, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and literacy/numeracy skills through hands-on exploration. It builds resilience by encouraging experimentation and risk-taking, promotes social collaboration, and instills a lifelong passion for learning while aiding in understanding the world.
