What a wonderful week we had here at LATP, celebrating Lunar New Year, a special festival celebrated across many Asian cultures.
Our kindergarten was filled with colour, conversations and celebrations as we explored Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival. Tamariki learned that this festival begins a new zodiac cycle and is celebrated by many communities around the world. Through stories, music and arts and crafts, children began to recognise that people celebrate important events in different ways and that these differences are something to be valued and respected.
Each child made a blossom, for our cherry blossom tree we created, representing growth, unity and belonging — kotahitanga.
On Friday, our whānau joined us for a shared Lunar New Year celebration. We gathered to enjoy delicious kai, beautiful music inspired by Asian cultures and the warmth of unity and aroha. Across many Asian traditions, Lunar New Year is a time for families and communities to come together, share food and welcome the year ahead with gratitude and joy — and that is exactly what we did. 🏮

He Wiki Kī i te Aroha – A Week Full of Love
What a busy and heart-warming week we have shared together as we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Our learning space was filled with creativity, laughter and, most of all, aroha. 💗
Tamariki immersed themselves in creating special artworks – carefully shaping little love hearts, threading and designing heart necklaces, and thoughtfully decorating heart-shaped cotton pads. Little hands worked with great focus and pride, each creation a reflection of the love they were thinking about and feeling.
As we explored the meaning of aroha, tamariki shared their beautiful understandings. They spoke about aroha for one another, showing kindness through helping hands and gentle words. They shared about aroha for those close to them – for their whānau, their friends, and even their pets. Some expressed aroha for themselves, recognising the importance of caring for their own hearts and feelings. Others shared their aroha for the things that bring them joy – drawing, building, singing and playing together.
We hope all of our tamariki and whānau feel surrounded by aroha not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day.
He waka eke noa – we are all in this together. 💕

As part of our Waitangi Day learning, tamariki spent time exploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and what it means for us here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Through our kōrero together, we talked about how the Treaty is about working together, showing respect, and caring for people and our environment. These ideas helped us think about how we can make our kindy a safe, kind, and fair place for everyone.
Tamariki shared thoughtful ideas alongside their friends as we created our own Kindy Treaty. Showing an understanding of being a good friend by listening to others, taking turns, and being kind. Tamriki demonstrated respect for their peers and kaiako, helping to honour the principles of partnership, participation, and protection in ways that were meaningful to everyone.
Tamariki were also invited create their own taonga, using moulding clay. They worked with great focus and care, exploring rolling, pinching, and shaping the clay into a koru-like design. This experience supported the development of his fine motor skills while allowing children to express their creativity and individuality.
When their taonga were complete, children proudly wore them around their neck. These taonga are more than just a necklace — it is a symbol of our learning, pride and commitment to being kind, respectful and connected in our LATP community 💛
