It sounds like a logical plan. It's getting colder; the open-water season is basically done, so you think you'll just hibernate and sort the swim out when the sun comes back.
But my advice: Summer is for racing; winter is for building. If you wait until summer to fix your stroke, youโve missed a big opportunity to really work on improving your swimming.
Technique developments arenโt like turning on a light switch. They take two distinct phases:
๐งLearning it: Breaking down old, inefficient habits.
Embedding it: Making the new movements completely automatic.
When we change your stroke, your body has to map out entirely new neuromuscular pathways.
At first, you have to think about every single entry, catch, and breath.
If you try to do that under the stress of a summer training block or race day adrenaline, your brain will immediately default back to your oldest, ugliest habits.
On top of that, you need time to build the specific muscular strength required to hold that new form.
A better body position or a cleaner catch uses different muscles, and those muscles need months of consistent work to build the endurance to survive a long swim.
Winter gives you the time in quiet lane space and mental space to imbed these changes in a controlled pool environment.
By the time summer arrives, the technique is automatic, the strength is there, and you can seamlessly take that efficiency out into the open water.
Spend your winter fixing it so you can spend your summer making minor tweaks and racing fast.

Sending a massive shout-out of support across the water to Melissa Dorr as she prepares to take on IRONMAN 70.3 Shanghai this weekend!
Melissa has had a super strong lead-up to this event, showing incredible form and dedication. Unfortunately, in the final weeks, she was thrown a bit of a curveball. While that introduces some uncertainty for race day, Melissa is showing her true grit by heading to the start line to give it a go and see how the day unfolds.
The unknowns are always a challenge in endurance racing, but turning up and being true to yourself and your best possible performance, whatever that looks like on the day, is what truly counts.
Melissa, on behalf of the whole Boost Team, we are with you in spirit! Weโre incredibly proud of your resilience and canโt wait to cheer you on from afar.
Go for it, Melissa! Have an amazing time in Shanghai!

Back home, a strong crew is heading to the bay for some fast-paced action through the vineyards - hopefully with a wine or two afterwards:
๐ฅ๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ช๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ๐ป (๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ป): Roger is riding a solid wave of fitness into this event. After focusing on some prior races, heโs had a relaxed build-up and is looking to enjoy the day with scaled expectations, but is still looking for a strong sub-4 marathon target!
๐๐ฎ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ป๐ & ๐ง๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐๐ฎ ๐ง๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ (๐๐ฎ๐น๐ณ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ป): These two have some serious personal bests in their sights. On paper, the work is done, and they are looking primed to chase those PBs!
๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ธ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ธ (๐๐ฎ๐น๐ณ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ป): Derek is using this as a vital stepping stone toward his Gold Coast Double (Marathon and Half), which is creeping up quickly on the calendar. A great chance to test the legs!
On behalf of the whole Boost Team, good luck to everyone racing! Weโll be watching those trackers!

Our sole UK Boost Coaching representative is flying the flag this weekend on the stunning ๐ฏ ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฎ, and I couldn't be more excited for him.
Finn has had an absolutely epic year of preparation. Whatโs been most impressive isn't the miles heโs clocked, but how heโs approached it all. Heโs stayed incredibly grounded, ensuring his training expectations played nicely with a demanding work schedule and the occasional (and well-deserved) social life and holiday balance.
As for the course? Itโs got a solid climb at the start of the bike, which I am sure is just a scenic investment. Once he's conquered the hill, he'll get to cash it in for some sweeping downhill with some of the best views in the world.
Finn - Soak up every second of that Mediterranean atmosphere, stay relaxed, and enjoy the ride. Youโve done the work, now go collect the reward!
Good luck for the day, Finn! Weโre all cheering for you.

In your head, youโre gliding like an Olympian. You feel sleek, powerful, and perfectly streamlined. But then... someone pulls out a camera.
Suddenly, you realise that what you feel youโre doing and what youโre actually doing are two completely different sports.
"Feel vs. Real" is a swimmer's biggest enemy.
You feel like your arm is high and wide, but itโs actually crossing your midline.
You feel like your legs are tight, but theyโre out there acting like a boat rudder.
Without a coach on the side to bridge that gap, youโre just reinforcing a "feeling" that isn't actually helping.
Iโve spent over 15 years and 3,000+ lessons helping swimmers align their "feel" with the "real" mechanics that produce speed.
Letโs get your stroke looking less like a struggle and more like the pro version youโve got in your head.

In the same lane, under the same lights, I heard two very different stories last week:
โจ "I canโt believe I swam a length in 3 lessons!"
๐ "I canโt believe I still canโt swim a length..." (5 lessons in).
On the surface, it looks like a gap in progress. In reality, itโs a masterclass in how individual journeys work.
Competence is Not a Sprint: We forget the "invisible years" behind ease. Mastery is about an accumulation of triggers, one personโs "aha!" moment happens at lesson 3, another's at lesson 10.
Coaching provides the roadmap, but the heavy lifting happens in the "quiet hours"โthose solo sessions where you struggle with the water alone.
After decades as a swimmer and coach, I don't panic if you aren't "proficient" by lesson five. Your body is simply still collecting the data it needs to succeed.
Self-mastery isnโt about how fast you reach the wall; itโs about the resilience you build by showing up when it's hard.
Keep putting in the work. The rewards follow persistence, not a schedule.
