Please keep an eye out for these. And not just if you are in Auckland. While they have only been spotted on the North shore, there's really just no way to know if they haven't spread further. If they get established it will devastate the entire bee industry. These guys literally eat bees!
So keep an eye out and report anything that look suspicious.

HELP US ERADICATE THE YELLOW-LEGGED HORNET
The discovery of the invasive hornet species, yellow-legged hornets, in Auckland, presents a major threat to New Zealand’s honey bees, native bees and other pollinators. They also pose a health threat to humans.

WE ARE REACHING OUT TO ALL NATURE-LOVERS TO BE ON THE WATCH FOR YELLOW-LEGGED HORNETS.

For information on how to spot yellow-legged hornets and the latest detection updates, visit:
https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/exotic-pests-and-diseases-in-new-zealand/active-biosecurity-responses-to-pests-and-diseases/yellow-legged-hornet-sightings-in-auckland-in-2025

PLEASE REPORT ANY SIGHTINGS OF SUSPECTED HORNETS OR HORNET NESTS online at report.mpi.govt.nz or by calling Biosecurity New Zealand’s exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

To date Biosecurity New Zealand (MPI) has identified 24 confirmed queen hornet specimens across Auckland. Fourteen of the 24 confirmed queen hornets were found with either developed nests or evidence of nesting. Inside one of the nest detections in Glenfield, 2 worker hornets were also found.

These latest developments are concerning, with the nests indicating these pests have been established in this area for some time.

I'll be at the Silverdale mall from 10-12 today through to Friday. Come on over and see the bees!

Just saw this little lady working the Manuka flowers on hamlin's Hill near Sylvia Park. Interestingly bumblebees don't make honey! But they do still collect Nectar and pollen. It's too cold for these flowers to be producing much nectar at the moment so I think she's out collecting pollen today.

Outside enjoying the sun. So are the bees!
Anyone who knows me knows I hate inauthenticity, so you know this actually happened while I was outside, doing my crochet in the sun with this very song playing!
