What an incredible way to wrap up our Term 1 inquiry! The school hall was transformed into a bustling international hub last week as we celebrated our unit, He Waka Eke Noa – A Celebration of Cultures. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the kind of excitement that only happens when our entire community comes together to share their stories.
Our tamariki have spent the term diving deep into the traditions, histories, and arts of various nations. This curiosity—our value of manawa reka—was on full display through the stunning exhibits. From the intricate cherry blossom art of Japan and the vibrant lanterns of China to the rich patterns of India, the hall was a kaleidoscope of color.
We journeyed through the landscapes of Australia, explored the unique traditions of Thailand, and grounded ourselves in the heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand. The children showed great manawaroa (resilience) in their research and preparation, ensuring every display did justice to the cultures they studied.
The highlight for many was the live presentations. It was moving to see our students and parents standing side-by-side to share traditional dances and stories. These moments perfectly captured whanaungatanga, as the bonds between home and school were strengthened through shared heritage.
Whether it was a rhythmic dance or a bilingual story reading, the pride on the children's faces was unmistakable. They acted as true kaitiaki (guardians) of their cultural knowledge, protecting and passing on the traditions that make their families unique.
No celebration is complete without food, and our parents certainly delivered! We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who brought in a plate to share. The "yummy" factor was off the charts, but more importantly, this act of sharing food is the ultimate expression of manaakitanga (hospitality and kindness). To taste the flavors of India, China, and beyond was a delicious reminder of how lucky we are to have such a diverse community.
A huge shout-out to the staff for their hard work behind the scenes and to the parents for their overwhelming support. The high turnout made the event feel truly special. We have truly lived the meaning of our inquiry title this term: He waka eke noa—we are all in this boat together.
We can’t wait to see where our learning takes us in Term 2!
