Sign for Change at TLL

Throughout August, we were so proud to be part of Sign for Change, celebrating and promoting New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

NZSL is a valued and important part of our curriculum here at TLL, and you’ll see our kaiako and tamariki using signs naturally throughout our everyday routines, play and learning. Being part of Sign for Change gave us the wonderful opportunity to learn a new sign each day and share these with those around us.

It was a beautiful way to help make one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s official languages more visible in everyday life, while supporting our children to communicate, connect and include others.

We are so proud of our tamariki and all the enthusiasm they showed throughout the month. We hope you’ll learn a few signs alongside them too!

Today we explored what happens when warm, coloured water meets cold water!

The tamariki watched in amazement as the dye came out like little clouds of “smoke”, floating to the surface before slowly sinking and dispersing through the cold water.

We discovered that the hotter the water, the faster the colour dispersed! Lots of curiosity, predictions and wonderful conversations happened as we watched our experiment unfold.

Uike Lea Faka-Tonga | Tongan Language Week

Ko e lea ko e koloa — Language is a treasure.

This week at The Learning Lane, our learning spaces became a little window into the beautiful culture, language and traditions of Tonga as we celebrated Tongan Language Week. We began by exploring lanu, the Tongan word for colour, learning about the colours of the Tongan flag and creating our very own flags together. We discovered where Tonga is in the world and talked about the beautiful islands and the ocean that surrounds them.Music and movement became a big part of our week as we listened to Tongan hiva (songs), enjoyed traditional music and had a go at playing instruments together. We also took our learning outdoors as we played the traditional Tongan game Tolo Pato, filling our space with plenty of laughter, movement and excitement!We explored ngatu, the beautiful traditional Tongan tapa cloth, and talked about the patterns and cultural significance behind this special treasure. We also discovered some of the incredible sea creatures found around Tonga, connecting our learning to the ocean and island environment. Our creative experiences continued as we made our own fans and created beautiful kahoa (necklaces), giving the children opportunities to explore Tongan-inspired patterns, colours and creative ways to celebrate Tongan culture. What made this week particularly special was seeing our tamariki become confident language learners — listening to new words, having a go at saying them, singing along, asking questions and sharing their discoveries with one another. Language really is a treasure. It carries culture, stories, identity and connections between generations. Through celebrating Lea Faka-Tonga, we have been reminded that when we make space for different languages and cultures within our learning environment, we are helping our tamariki to develop a deeper understanding of the diverse world around them while showing respect for the identities and cultures of others.

👅 Exploring Our Sense of Taste! 🍊🍋🧁
Today we continued exploring our five senses, with a special focus on our sense of taste! 👀👂👃🖐️👅

We started by icing our cake and, of course, we had to take turns tasting the sweet, delicious icing! 😋🧁 We used our describing words to talk about what we could taste and how it made our taste buds feel.
"It was sticky"
"Liquidy"
"Scrummy"
"Delicious "

Next came the oranges! 🍊 We predicted that they might be sour, but we were all very surprised to discover just how sweet and juicy they were! We decided to turn our oranges into fresh orange juice and added a little water before enjoying a taste.

Then it was time for the lemons… 🍋 OH MY! This time our predictions were definitely right — they were SOUR! 😝🍋 There were lots of funny faces as we experienced that strong, tangy taste!

What a wonderful sensory experience! Along the way we used lots of describing words such as sweet, sour, juicy, tangy, delicious and yummy, helping to build and extend our vocabulary while having lots of fun.

Who knew learning with our taste buds could be so much fun? 💛👅🍊🍋

🍰 A Feast for the Senses! 👃👅👀🖐️
Today we continued our five senses learning with a deliciously creative cake-making experience!
We began by making an allergy-friendly chocolate cake, complete with icing that we were able to taste test. 😋🍫 There were lots of smiles as we explored the delicious taste and talked about the flavours we could notice.

Then we took our cake-making outdoors, where a wonderful sensory cake-making station and shop had been set up! 🧁

The children had so much fun “icing” their foam cakes, sprinkling them with colourful salt and decorating them with beautiful natural treasures including rocks, shells and butterflies. 🪨🐚🦋

Of course, every cake shop needs a way to pay! 💰 Our shop had a very special currency — counting and high fives! ✋ This created lots of opportunities for counting, turn-taking, communication and social interaction as the children bought and sold their delicious creations.
There were wonderful conversations about the different flavours they had created, the colours and textures they had used, and how their cakes looked and smelled. And yes… they certainly smelled delicious! 👃🍰

What a wonderful way to explore our senses through imaginative play, creativity, language, maths and lots of fun! 💕✨

Kia orana!
This week we have been celebrating Cook Islands Language Week with lots of hands-on learning and fun!
Together we explored the Cook Islands language through greetings, colours and counting, enjoyed the vibrant music and drumming, and learnt about the beautiful flowers of the Cook Islands. We discovered where the Cook Islands are on the world map, admired some real Cook Islands currency kindly shared by one of our children, and learnt that the 15 stars on the flag represent the 15 islands.�Our creativity shone as we made turtles, designed tapa-inspired patterns, created colourful tivaevae patterns, and crafted our own ei katu (flower headbands). We even had a fun ei race before finishing the week by enjoying some delicious Cook Islands doughnuts together!
What a wonderful week celebrating the language, culture and traditions of the Cook Islands together, and trying some fresh coconut.

🫧 Bubbles, bubbles everywhere! 🫧

After a very chilly start to the morning, we were lucky enough to enjoy some beautiful sunshine while having fun with bubbles! The children loved taking turns blowing their own bubbles, discovering through plenty of trial and error just how much (or how little!) to blow to make the biggest bubbles. Once they were floating through the air, it was time to chase, catch, and pop them all around our playground!

Bubble play is so much more than just fun. Blowing bubbles helps strengthen the muscles used for speech development and encourages children to practise controlling their breath. Chasing and popping bubbles also supports visual tracking, hand-eye coordination, balance, and gross motor skills as children move their bodies in different ways.

Learning through play really is the best kind of learning!
