The inaccuracy of the heel prick test undermines the care of newborns, says Professor Jane Harding. False positive readings result in unnecessary treatment, while false negatives mean some babies don't get the treatment they need. Researchers at the Liggins Institute & Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences - FMHS are calling for hospitals to switch to a better, more expensive test for neonatal hypoglycaemia (low blood sugars), which would improve the care of vulnerable babies, cause less distress to families, and save money in the long run. http://www.liggins.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/news/news-2018/researchers-call-for-cheaper--better-screening-for-brain-threate.html

Amazing! 53 babies joined the hPOD Study in March. Recent comments: "It [the study] was easy to be part of", "I didn't really notice it, the midwife just rubbed the gel in her mouth and that was it", "I like how there were no extra blood tests, just the ones he was going to have anyway".
