Activated charcoal isn’t harmless, especially in children ⚠️
🟤 Can cause constipation and abdominal discomfort
🖤 Turns stools black, which can mask bleeding and delay care
💊 Interferes with the absorption of important medications
🫁 If vomited then aspirated it can seriously affect the lungs
That’s why activated charcoal is only used in very specific situations, under medical guidance, and isn’t recommended for gastro.
With gastro, what matters most is supportive care and knowing when to seek help

To the families and communities affected by yesterday’s attack at Bondi, we want to extend our heartfelt sympathies and support.
We also extend our hearts out to the the first responders, both professionals and members of the public, who stepped in during an unimaginable situation.
The physical and emotional challenges you faced, and continue to face, cannot be overstated.
Our thoughts are also with the medical teams across emergency departments, theatres, ICUs, and surgical wards who will be caring for those injured, and supporting families in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead.
Events like this leave a lasting impact on people, families, and entire communities.
They are not something you simply move on from, and they are not forgotten.
We are holding all those affected in our thoughts.

A few other things you can do that help stop baby from overheating on hot days
▫️ Move them to a cooler room
Pop their cot or a travel cot into a room that is cooler or has aircon
▫️ Dress them in lighter sleepwear
Your little ones doesn’t need to wear a sleep sack. A short body suit is fine on those really hot nights
▫️ Consider a portable aircon unit if it’s safe for baby’s sleep space and vented properly
I have one in my room and it works great! (But is a little loud)

What parents need to know about croup 👇
Croup can be scary because little ones can get sick VERy quickly.
Croup happens when the upper airway and voice box swell (usually from a virus like parainfluenza).
This swelling causes the barking cough, noisy breathing, and sudden work of breathing.
❤️ HELPFUL THINGS FOR PARENTS TO KNOW
▫️ Croup often starts suddenly at night or early morning
▫️ Serious croup can come on fast because breathing effort plus panic makes it harder for little ones
▫️ If your child is struggling to breathe, try to calm or distract them with cuddles, a tablet, singing, or walking outside
🤔 CROUP MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS
▫️ Steamy bathrooms or cold air do not treat croup
▫️ They help because they calm your child, not because they reduce swelling
🏥 WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR URGENTLY
▫️ Increased work of breathing
▫️ Noisy breathing even when calm
▫️ Very tired or worsening
🚑 WHEN TO CALL AN AMBULANCE
▫️ Struggling to breathe
▫️ Very noisy breathing (even while settled)
▫️ Turning blue around the mouth, hands, or feet
Remember, emergencies don’t wait until you are ready. They often happen in the middle of the night when it’s just you and your family
When they happen, you’ll fall back on the knowledge and skills you learnt beforehand
That is why we teach first aid in a way that is simple to learn and easy to remember, so you can act confidently when the moments matter.

Here’s how to stop it spreading so it doesn’t infect the whole family ‼️
Hand, Foot & Mouth is everywhere right now.
So if one of your little ones gets sick you need to take action to keep the rest of the family from getting sick too (and spreading it around daycare!)
🧼 Keep them home if they’re unwell or still have wet blisters
🧴 Wash hands often after the toilet, nappy changes, and shared toys
🚫 No sharing cups, cutlery, towels, toothbrushes
💧 Don’t pop blisters keep them clean and let them dry naturally
🧽 Disinfect surfaces and clean toys regularly
🧺 Hot-wash clothes, bedding, and any soiled items
🤧 Elbow sneeze or tissues straight in the bin

After hearing many stories from parents I truely believe that . . .
In an emergency we don’t often ‘rise to the occasion’
Instead we fall back on what we know
When we haven’t learnt what to do, it’s hard to act
At we teach families how to manage emergencies and serious injuries with your little ones
In a way that is
❤️ Simple to learn
❤️ Easily remembered,
❤️ So you can act confidently in the moments that matter
🥰 taught by experienced paediatric ICU nurses
You can learn online at anytime in our Comprehensive First Aid course or in person if you are in Auckland
Thank you Holly for sharing your story with us. You are truely a life saver!!!

Start CPR when you see these two signs 👇
💛 They’re NOT responsive
💛 They’re NOT breathing normally
(We call these the two NOTs)
Any person, adult, child, or baby, who is NOT responsive and NOT breathing normally needs CPR started straight away.
If you’re not sure, start anyway.
Doing something is always better than doing nothing.
We have a free baby CPR course that any parent can access at any time.
➡️ It is always available in our 'link in bio'
We often think that in an emergency we’ll rise to the occasion.
But most often, we fall to the level of our knowledge.
Learning before hand means you know it before you need it
