Skills Trades Training

Skills Trades Training The trades that power New Zealand, all in one place.

We train the next generation of tradies across electrical, plumbing, gasfitting, drainlaying and roofing with hands-on learning from industry experts. ETCO is a wholly owned subsidiary of Master Electricians established to provide employment and training for the electrical industry in New Zealand. Our two main areas of activity are:

* the employment and placement of electrical apprentices via

our group apprenticeship scheme, and
* the provision of training courses for apprentices and tradespeople

Since our beginnings in 1991, our commitment to producing the best has helped thousands of ETCO apprentices and students achieve outstanding results and successes in industry competitions, national examinations and the industry itself.

It was great to see everyone who visited our booth at the Master Plumbers Otago Trade Show. We enjoyed catching up with suppliers and industry folks from across the region.

Congratulations to Dan Wright from Wright Plumbing, who took home our hamper giveaway. πŸŽ‰

Skills Trades Training would like to share Peter Couchman's story, leader of Seven Electrical, from M2 Magazine.

40+ years in the trade. Now he's building the next generation of electricians.

Peter doesn't use a psychometric test to pick his apprentices. He's watching effort, attitude, and whether someone's actually done their homework before the interview even starts.

"We talk about craftsmanship."

That's the standard he's holding the next generation of electricians to.

Meet two Skills Trades Training team members who spend their spare time volunteering as firefighters.

Shane's path began with a life-changing accident. Nearly five years on, he's gone from rural firefighter at Lake Rotoiti to Crew Leader, now working alongside career crews with the Nelson composite brigade and as a GoodSAM responder. By day, he's spent over two years with Skills Trades Training, now in the Assessment Manager role.

"After my recovery, I wanted to give back and support others in the same way people supported me." – Shane

Trent has volunteered with Wallacetown Volunteer Fire Brigade in Southland for 14 years, including five as a career firefighter. Now the brigade's training officer, he helps members work towards new ranks. By day, he's a Training Advisor at Skills Trades Training, helping electrical apprentices complete their qualifications for four years.

"I see it as the responsibility of the willing and able to step up and help others who need it." – Trent

Ngā mihi, Shane and Trent, for everything you do both at work and on the job.
