Last week, I had the awesome opportunity to travel to Samoa with Ngā Toki from Whangārei to represent Aotearoa at the First Nations Basketball Tournament. I was one of 11 players selected for the U16 team.

We played five games and made it to the final, finishing second place and winning silver medals after a very close game against Polynesian Basketball, which we lost by just four points.

When we were off the court some of my favourite parts of the trip were swimming at the To-Sua Ocean Trench and Piula Cave Pool, snorkelling at the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, visiting the local markets and trying lots of amazing Samoan food. It was an awesome experience, and I’m really proud to have represented Aotearoa and Ngā Toki!

Police are seeing a growing number of students riding electric bikes and scooters that are not legal to
use without a licence or motor vehicle registration. Our primary concern is the safety of our young
people.
Internationally, jurisdictions such as Queensland, Australia, have faced similar challenges, including
injuries and death involving young riders whilst riding e-bikes and e-scooters. In response, Queensland
authorities have introduced restrictions, including banning under-16-year-olds from riding e-bikes and
e-scooters on public paths and roads.
We are aware there is some confusion among young people and their families about which electric
bikes and scooters are lawful. To help address this, we have attached a short information sheet outlining
the key points for parents, caregivers and students.

Thank you to Colin at the Photo Store in Warkworth. He serviced all eight of our
school photography cameras in record time, donating his time and expertise. He was
hugely helpful and knowledgeable and is extremely passionate about photos and
photography

Our Year 11 Commerce class visited Ti Point Reptile Park in Leigh. During the trip, we
learned about how the business operates and the different products and services it
provides to customers. We got to see a variety of reptiles like tortoises, lizards, and
alligators. Ti Point Reptile Park has 3 of only 10 alligators in New Zealand. The trip
also helped us understand some of the business concepts we have been learning in
class, such as how a business manages costs, profits, marketing, and how a business
attracts customers. Overall, it was an enjoyable and useful experience because we
could connect what we learned in Commerce to a real-life business.

We have just finished our Lifeskills course last week and pleased to advise our local
student Liam Bleakley from Rodney College received the Lifeskills Course Merit
award. There were 35 students who completed the five day course held at the
Whenuapai Air Base Youth Development Unit facilities. Liam was sponsored by the
Wellsford RSA Club. This award is given from the NZDF Staff and Blue Light staff in
attendance during the week. This was a unanimous choice from all the staff. The
Merit award is a recognition of a student’s exceptional achievement, dedication, and
contribution throughout the course. It symbolises a commitment to the recipients
outstanding performance and character. The award was presented by the reviewing
officer Dean Agnew, Director and CEO of Trillian Trust. Dean is the co-founding
member of Trillian Trust.

Our girls headed off to Hamilton yesterday to play in the UNISS (Upper North Island Secondary School) tournament with their 1st game today at 11am against Northland College and 3pm against Waiheke High School🙌😊

Year 13 History and Tourism students experienced a travel experience linked to their studies without even leaving the classroom. Mindflight7 brought their VR learning experience to Rodney College giving us the opportunity to explore both near and far and interact with a variety of different settings. A range of Australia based 360 videos saw us swimming with Whale Sharks off Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, hanging out of a helicopter over the Gold Coast, walking past waterfalls, and diving the Great Barrier Reef. Tourism students are currently completing their Australian destinations unit so the timing was perfect. Videos that covered sites of conflict in the NZ Wars were on offer for the History Students, as well as a walk through of several of the world’s major galleries. Students also tried out selecting their own destinations on a more interactive platform where they could grab, move, point, and drop using controllers. This was our first visit from Mindflight7 and we were impressed with the learning potential and the range of different destinations and environments that we could experience.
