The E Phrygian mode starts on the 3rd degree of a major scale. 🎸 In this example, we’re using the key of C major, so the notes begin and end on E while using all the notes of C major. It’s a great way to unlock the distinctive Spanish and exotic sound of the Phrygian mode!

D Dorian in the E Shape! 🎸

This pattern runs diatonically to the C major scale, meaning it uses the exact same notes but starts and resolves on D—the second degree of C major. Starting on the 10th fret of the 6th string, this is a great way to hear and visualise the unique Dorian sound while staying within the key of C.

🎸 C Ionian Mode – E Shape 🎸

The C Ionian mode is simply the C major scale, and this E shape is one of the most useful patterns to connect across the fretboard. The main root note is on the 8th fret of the 6th string, making it a great position to build your fretboard knowledge, improve improvisation, and link your scale shapes together.

Take it slow, focus on the root notes, and enjoy the journey! 🎶

A Minor Pentatonic Pattern 5 🎸

This pattern starts on the 15th fret and contains the root note on the 17th fret of the 6th string. Learning all 5 pentatonic positions is a great way to connect the fretboard and unlock smoother solos across the neck.
