Some big results on Tuesday for our football and netball teams as they head into the play-off stage of their respective tournaments. Our Senior A Basketball Boy's enter the fray as they start their campaign with an eye on qualifying for the National Championship.

Onehunga High School was saddened to hear of the passing of alumnus and champion athlete Peter Reeves, aged 80.

Peter was an outstanding middle distance runner during his years at OHS. He represented the school with distinction in the 440 yards, 880 yards, one mile and cross country before going on to achieve considerable success at national level.

Peter won back to back New Zealand junior 880 yards titles in 1964 and 1965. As a senior, he finished second in the New Zealand 5000m championship in 1972, after placing third the previous year. At just 19, he also completed the 1966 Rotorua Marathon in 2:40:45, finishing 15th.

Peter’s achievements at OHS and in national athletics form an important part of our school’s sporting history.

Captain Spotlight: Meet Senior A Basketball co-captains Tiaki Strickland and Tyler Tahapeehi-Litaio, who will lead OHS into the AA Premiership tournament beginning tomorrow.

Tiaki and Tyler have represented OHS basketball since Year 9 and are now approaching 50 games for the Senior A side. Both have been part of the senior team since 2024 and value the opportunity to lead the side in their final year.

The team heads into the tournament after a strong season, reaching the Central West final and finishing in the top four at the Greater Auckland Basketball Tournament.

“Our main goal is to compete,” Tiaki said. “We want to go into every game believing we have a chance.” Tyler shares that focus, with the team determined to compete with the best and make a strong run through the tournament.

Congratulations to our Year 9 Tournament of Minds team, who received the Spirit of TOM Award at the regional competition on Saturday!

The team spent six weeks preparing for the Languages and Literature challenge. They created a comedic radio play set in a world where modern technology disappears, developing their own script, costumes, props and sound effects before performing it live.

On competition day, students also faced a Spontaneous Challenge. They were given an unfamiliar problem and just five minutes to work together and develop a creative response.

The Spirit of TOM Award recognises creativity, teamwork, innovation and respect. Our students showed all of these qualities, particularly when responding to technical difficulties during the competition.

A fantastic recognition of their hard work and the way they represented OHS and our WAKA values. Well done to the team! 🌟

With the opening round robin being completed this morning, here is the remaining draw for Tuesday.
Tomorrow will see the start of the senior A Boys Basketball at the AA Premiership Zone 1 tournament.

LOCKDOWN ENDED

Onehunga High School went into lockdown at approximately 11.00am today due to a medical event at Central Auckland Specialist School.

Parents and caregivers were contacted by email and information was also provided on the school website.

The situation was well managed and the lockdown has now ended. Our students and staff responded extremely well and followed all instructions throughout.

Thank you to our school community for your understanding and cooperation.

Winter Tournament Week is here! The biggest date on the school sporting calendar and these are student athletes that will be representing Onehunga High School this week.

Alumni Spotlight: Professor Morgan Tuimalealiifano attended Onehunga High School from 1968 to 1972, serving as Head Boy in his final year.

The 1972 OHS Magazine described him as an outstanding leader. He led the prefect team, represented OHS in the 1st XV and excelled in public speaking. That year, he placed second out of 30 speakers from 15 schools at the Polynesian Oratory Contest.

Professor Tuimalealiifano remembers his time at OHS fondly, particularly the teachers who influenced him. “For me, it was the teachers who made the difference between learning and making something of one’s self.” In his final year, he chose to study History, beginning an interest that would eventually shape his academic career.

After leaving OHS, Morgan moved to Suva to study at the University of the South Pacific. He completed a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts before completing his PhD at the Australian National University in Canberra.

He went on to establish a distinguished academic career at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, becoming an Associate Professor in Pacific History and Coordinator of the History Division within the School of Social Sciences. His teaching and research have made a significant contribution to the study and understanding of Pacific history and governance.

He also remembers the influence of Mr Con McCarthy (Mac) on OHS and the wider community. In 1996, Morgan located Mr McCarthy in Hamilton and visited him to pay his respects. The two continued corresponding until Mr McCarthy passed away.

From Head Boy and 1st XV player to Professor and respected Pacific historian, Professor Morgan Tuimalealiifano’s achievements form an important part of Onehunga High School’s history.
