Message from the SBS Board that was shared with its community earlier today.

Kia ora whānau,

The Stanley Bay School Board acknowledges that we have received communication from nine parents/whānau, as well as a letter from the Staff Representative, expressing concern about the changes made to the Education and Training Act last Tuesday.

Since 2020, Stanley Bay School and 2500 other boards have been required to:
- ensure plans, policies, and curriculum reflect local tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori and te ao Māori
- take reasonable steps to make instruction available in tikanga Māori and te reo Māori
- achieve equitable outcomes for Māori

Parliament voted to amend the law so that student achievement is now the paramount/primary objective for boards.

At the same time, Parliament requires boards to seek equitable outcomes for Māori ākonga, take reasonable steps to provide for students to learn in te reo Māori when requested by parents/caregivers, and to ensure that school policies and practices reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity. Concerns have been raised throughout the motu about the removal of the explicit Te Tiriti reference, which has also prompted questions from some within our community.

Our strategic direction as a primary school remains unchanged. This board is fully supportive of everything our highly skilled teachers do to embed an understanding of many cultures, and, importantly, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori, including tikanga, reo, kapa haka and the ongoing professional development of our kaiako. We are incredibly proud of our whakapapa, connections and relationships with mana whenua. We will continue to honour Te Tiriti in our work as trustees of the school.

The refreshed Stanley Bay School Strategic Plan (2026-2028) is nearing completion, following consultation with the community through surveys, feedback and in-person sessions. We are confident that the commitments to Te Tiriti within our existing plan, which have served our community well, will continue to be reflected.

Our final meeting for 2025 is scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday, 9 December. There will be an agenda item at that meeting to discuss the law change. Please note, the additional meeting date previously stated on the website (18 November) was incorrect and has now been removed.

We would like to thank our wonderful community for its continued support as we work towards our vision of all ākonga demonstrating leadership, determination, achievement and success.

Ngā mihi nui,
Jonathan Duncan
Presiding Member
Stanley Bay School Board
