The freedom to be children
Here at Busy Minds, there is nothing we love more than giving children the freedom to simply be children, to explore, create, discover, take risks, work alongside each other, and most importantly… have fun.
But behind every moment of play, there is purpose.
Everything we do at Busy Minds has been carefully thought about. Our environments are intentionally created, our conversations are intentional, and our teaching is intentional, while still allowing children the space, time, and freedom to lead their own learning.
Take something as simple as a swing
Many people see “just a swing” but we see so much more.
We see children:
Building confidence as they challenge themselves to go higher
Developing perseverance as they practise again and again to be able to swing
Strengthening their bodies through balance, coordination, and movement Exploring mathematical concepts, high, low, fast, slow, up and down
Problem-solving, communicating, negotiating turns, and supporting each other
Real learning happens through real experiences.
This is why our environment includes things like our mud kitchen, with real mud, real mess, and real opportunities to explore. Children mix, measure, create, imagine, collaborate, and test their ideas. They are scientists, designers, builders, storytellers, and problem-solvers.
Loose parts are also a huge part of our Busy Minds programme. Unlike toys that have one set purpose, loose parts can become anything a child imagines. A piece of wood might become a bridge, a phone, a ramp, a home, or part of a creation we would never have thought of.
Loose parts encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and independence. They allow children to think for themselves rather than follow instructions.
At Busy Minds, children move freely throughout their environment. They have choices, they have ownership, and they are trusted as capable learners.
We believe an early childhood centre should feel like an extension of home, a place where children feel safe, valued, confident, and free to explore who they are.
Because childhood isn’t about rushing children to the next stage.
It’s about giving them the time and space to enjoy the stage they are in.
Busy Minds, where play has purpose. See you all tomorrow.
