So here’s the deal.. Oral diseases are preventable! This means early detection and professional preventative advice can make a big difference!

As you may or may not know I am a Dental Hygienist and happen to have a brain full to the brim with preventative knowledge on how to best look after your teeth and gums. With all this information I worry for the oral health of people our age, the young professionals/students who leave free dental care at age 18 and don't get round to getting a check up until something starts to hurt (which is neve

An easy switch for plastic free July, waste free toothpaste. Solid - Sustainable Oral Care jars of paste is my favourite paste and the jars can be sent back to be reused. NZ made and a simple switch to reduce plastic waste, one tube at a time. Spearmint is my go too.

You want 1000 parts per million of fluoride for it to actually be effective against tooth decay. So important for little teeth and teeth new into the mouth 🦷 I use Solid - Sustainable Oral Care toothpaste for our 1 year old and it meets these requirements too and comes in a reusable jar so a good plastic free option too.

Some tips from the MOH 😁

Travelling and not able to brush your teeth, or no toothbrush is handy? It’s not the end of the world, so long as it’s only for a couple of days… just brush whenever you can next.

Meanwhile, you can:
➡️ rinse using water or saline solution (made by dissolving salt in water).
➡️ then rub fluoride toothpaste around your teeth with your finger.

Having healthy teeth and gums helps protect your smile and supports your overall health. It can also avoid the pain and cost of decay.

➡️ Brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and just before going to bed.
➡️ Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
➡️ Hold your toothbrush at a 45° angle to your gums.
➡️ Brush all tooth surfaces gently and thoroughly by moving your brush back and forth in short tooth-wide strokes.

Love Solid Toothpaste and some good advice re: whitening toothpastes.

Q. Does SOLID have a whitening toothpaste?

First, let's look at what can make your teeth appear less white.

There are two types of staining or discolouration that can occur with teeth – extrinsic (on the outside of the tooth) and intrinsic (inside the tooth).

Surface or extrinsic staining can generally be removed with regular thorough brushing with any toothpaste and toothbrush, in conjunction with a scale and polish at the hygienist when needed. For anything more than this, you need to use a whitening agent like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

A lot of toothpastes have ‘whitening’ in the name or tagline, but do not contain any proven whitening ingredients. The removal of surface stains through brushing will make teeth appear whiter, but most decent toothpastes are designed to do this anyway.

What are your thoughts on tooth whitening? Should we work on formulating a true whitening toothpaste?
