Saturday 15 August, Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Patronal Feast of Aotearoa New Zealand

A former Bishop of Auckland, Bishop John Mackey, was a man of profound intellect and thoughtfulness. When asked why Bishop Pompallier might have chosen the feast of Mary, Mother of God under her title of Our Lady of the Assumption as our patronal feast, Bishop Mackey wrote a beautiful reflection. I’d like to share a few of his thoughts with you. He wrote the following:

This dedication is a sign of the vibrant hope in which we face our future. With so uncertain a future before us, hope is an appropriate virtue. Mary’s Assumption is the fullest expression of Christianity’s hope that God will be faithful to his promises to us.

The life, death and resurrection of Jesus is, of course, the only foundation upon which hope exists. However, the Church’s teachings on Our Lady are, as it were, grace notes on that reality of Jesus Christ. Since the inter-relationships between Mary, Jesus and the Church are so close, it is to be expected that the work of redemption, so full of promise for each one of us, has already been accomplished in Mary, Mother of God, but our Mother too.
