Winter Activities at Sunbeams
Over the last couple of weeks we have been very busy actively following children’s interests. Our recent inquiry on transportation is still being explored with daily construction of boats at the glue gun and carpentry tables. There has been lots of discussion around whether these boats can float so we have been testing seaworthiness in our water trough!
The tamariki have taken a keen interest in our gardens, preparing them for planting and talking about what we would like to grow. We talked about bees and their important role in the garden so we have planted echinacea and alyssum seeds. The children are watering these and checking each day for signs of sprouting! There has been enthusiastic discussion around the vegetables we want to plant and we are looking forward to creating our veggie patch. We have been learning about Papatuanuku, our Earth mother, the trees, plants and crops and the insects that make these their home. We made a Sunbeams tree with leaves made from children’s handprints. We have been provided with inspiration in the form of beautiful flowers from Olivia (Nelly's mum) who has provided us with blooms from her flower shop. These have been used for still life drawing/painting and creating dough gardens with shells, roses and freesias.
