Department of Physics, University of Auckland
This is the official page for the Department of Physics at The University of Auckland. We’re very proud of our neighbourhood.

We also offer courses tailored to allied disciplines such as biomedicine, engineering, geology, climate science, energy and environmental sustainability, optics, and electronics. And for those just passing through, there’s an introductory course that delves int

"Not too hot, not too cold, but just right."
In the fairy tale Goldilocks was talking about porridge. Here, we're talking about planets with the ideal conditions for supporting life as we know it.
The Department of Physics, University of Auckland, along with Auckland Astronomical Society and the Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture Trust, is excited to welcome Dr Natalie Batalha to the faculty for a public lecture entitled 'A Planet for Goldilocks: The search for evidence of life beyond Earth'.
Named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People this year, Dr Batalha is an astrophysicist at NASA Ames Research Center and she's the project scientist for NASA's Kelper Mission. In 2011 Dr Batalha led the team responsible for the discovery of Kepler-10b, the mission's first confirmation of a rocky planet outside our solar system. And now you can hear her tell us about the terrestrial-sized planets that populate the galaxy, as well as exotic worlds unlike anything that exists in the solar system.
If that's not an invitation, we're not sure what is.
Join us on Friday 6 October for this incredible event. For more details, check out our website.

Prof Richard Easther asks a question to which the answer is "science"
What was that strange object glowing above New Zealand on Anzac Day? Last night a bright disk-shaped object had New Zealanders craning their necks at the sky. Cosmologist Richard Easther explains what it was. Clue: not Venus. Last night my twitter feed carried a string of "what's that in the western sky" queries, including this picture from Rachael King: Th
