Tēnā koutou katoa, dear Kiwi Room whānau,

We have had another busy and enjoyable two weeks in the Kiwi Room! Our tamariki have been exploring animals, sensory experiences, movement and creative play through a range of hands-on activities.

We explored different animal pictures covered with clear cellophane, using our fingers to press and move pompoms underneath. The children enjoyed finding their favourite animals while listening to Kaiako name them, supporting their fine motor skills, sensory exploration and early language development.

During our creative play, the children used crayons to make their own drawings. Some children drew things they had recently seen outdoors, such as bubbles, showing how they can bring their real-life experiences into their artwork.

We also explored the ocean during Tonga Language Week, using cornflour and blue paint to create a sensory ocean with different sea animals. The children enjoyed learning some of the Tongan names for the animals while exploring the soft, squishy texture.
It has been lovely to see our tamariki learning through curiosity, movement, language and hands-on exploration.

Kia Ora Tui Room Whānau,

Over the past two weeks in our Tui Room, we have begun exploring our new topic of Books, creating opportunities for our tamariki to engage with familiar stories in fun, hands-on ways. One of our learning experiences was inspired by the book Today Is Monday. Tamariki enjoyed reading the story alongside kaiako and matching the different foods to the correct day of the week. This encouraged children to develop their listening and comprehension skills, memory, sequencing, and confidence in recognising familiar foods and days.

We also explored We’re Going on a Bear Hunt through a sensory experience. Kaiako created different sensory settings inspired by the story, including water, snow, the forest, and a cave where the bear was hiding. Tamariki used a small figurine to travel through each setting, recreating the journey from the story. This experience encouraged imaginative play, sensory exploration and helped children connect the events and settings in a familiar story to their own play.

Alongside our book experiences, we have enjoyed a range of other exciting learning opportunities. To celebrate Maths Week, tamariki took part in a number fish game, counting the fish and matching the correct number to each pond. We also celebrated Cook Islands Language Week through creative flag art activities, giving tamariki an opportunity to explore and appreciate Cook Islands culture. We have also begun preparing artwork for the upcoming Tongan Language Week.

Our tamariki have also been busy exploring fish skeletons, developing fine motor skills as they carefully inserted cotton buds as the bones of the fish, as well as exploring the letter B and transforming it into a bear. Tamariki have also been investigating the concepts of hot and cold through hands-on experiences

It has been a wonderful two weeks filled with stories, sensory exploration, creativity, culture, and discovery. We are excited to continue bringing books to life and creating meaningful experiences that support our tamariki to learn, explore, and celebrate the world around them.

Kia ora Pūkeko whānau,

Over the past two weeks, our Pūkeko Room tamariki have been busy exploring our main topic, Occupations, and extending their learning into the Living World. 🌿🌏
Through a variety of fun and engaging activities, tamariki explored different occupations, nature, animals, and the world around them. We also celebrated Cook Islands Language Week, learning about the beautiful language and culture of the Cook Islands. 🌺
Our tamariki also enjoyed an exciting Dinosaur Exploration, including a special visit from a librarian from the museum. They discovered fascinating facts about dinosaurs, explored different fossils, and enjoyed listening to dinosaur stories. 🦖🦴
It has been wonderful to see our tamariki’s curiosity, excitement, and enthusiasm as they explored, discovered, and learned together with their friends.
