We've tested many methods for encouraging people to scroll down a page. Content about the great stuff the website has further down, bouncing arrows saying scroll for more, you name it. The method that seems to work best is hinting; The top of the content below the 'fold' can be seen partially cut off by the bottom. of the viewport. It's the cut off that seems to makes it work

Another tip from our upcoming UX courses in Auckland. If you need to test proposed navigation IA for a website or app but don't have a testable design yet consider tree testing. It's a great way to get quick validation of proposed menu labels and grouping.

Create a tree menu of your proposed design (see pic) then give people tasks (e.g 'show us how you would send us a message') to see if they can navigate using your menu item. There are lots of great tools that let you do this easily such as NZ's own https://www.optimalworkshop.com/treejack/

How many people do we need to include in our research?

One way to approach this is to try and estimate our data saturation point; the number where including more people won’t result in any new insights.

The tricky bit is how do we know what that number is before we see the results?

A method we often use is:
• Define your population (the overall group of people you need information from)
• Estimate divergences in need or behaviour within that population
• Recruit a small number of people from each divergent group

This approach is surprisingly effective at producing a sample that gets you effective coverage with a smaller group of people.

This method and more user/customer research methods are covered in our crash course and design research course in Auckland next month, learn more or sign up here:

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing some goodies from our upcoming UX courses in Auckland, starting with a back of the hand method for thinking about if a UX project needs research.

This is an informal method where we estimate or measure the cost of failure and our confidence in the validity of your current knowledge.
We then see if it the result fits into one of these three buckets:
1. If the cost of failure is low then you may be able to work just from assumptions even if you have little evidence of user need
2. If the cost of failure is high but you are confident in your understanding of user needs then you may be able to design from assumptions then test those assumptions post-design. Remember we tend to over estimate how well we understand our users.
3. If the risk of failure is high and we only have unvalidated assumptions about user need then make a case for formative research.

This method and other research methods are covered in our courses in Auckland next month!

New team tickets are here, making it easier and cheaper to enrol your team in a UX Gym course.

Team tickets offer:
• A bulk Discount: A special group rate that recognises the value of team enrolments.
• Simplified Enrolment: Enrol multiple team members effortlessly with a single ticket purchase.
You don't need to all belong to the same organisation to get team tickets and their associated discounts, the tickets are open to any group of people who can club together and enrol at the same time.

We love team discounts because it encourages people to invite others on this learning journey, and often leads to people outside of traditional design disciplines embracing a human centred approach to thinking about their work.

These tickets are available on all of our current courses, starting with our Auckland courses next month. See the course list below, round up a group of friends or colleagues and get started with your UX learning journey!

These tickets are available for all of our courses here:
