Though not designated as a trauma hospital, Waitakere Hospital often has major trauma cases appearing on their doorstep. ED drop-offs come without warning and present unique challenges for a centre that doesn't have the surgical services to manage such injuries. While there are always ways to improve, at our recent Trauma simulation session, Waitakere showcased their expertise and adaptability in managing such cases. The session provided valuable training for the Health NZ - Waitematā hospital team while also providing an opportunity to test the Northern Region Trauma Networks new paediatric trauma referral service in real-time. Thank you to everyone who played a part in such a successful day!

In March, the NetworkZ team enjoyed the stunning beaches of the Bay of Plenty while delivering back-to-back trauma courses in the Whakatane and Tauranga Emergency Departments. We're grateful for the excellent planning and seamless coordination from the local Health NZ - Bay of Plenty faculty, which resulted in two successful sessions!
Participants showed excellent multidisciplinary teamwork and interdepartmental collaboration. Last-minute changes to participants and faculty showed everyone’s adaptability and backup behaviour, reflecting dedication to achieving the optimum outcome.

We have two very different courses running concurrently at NetworkZ today! Our Technical Training course is giving participants an up close and personal look at the world inside the SimMan 3G manikin, with the help from our expert friends Laerdal Australia and New Zealand, while our Instructor Training course has everyone in deep discussion about the mechanisms underlying effective debriefing following simulations.

One of our main goals with NetworkZ simulation training is to enhance teamwork and communication within healthcare teams. We use evidence-based practice to achieve this, creating learning environments to promote the conditions required for high-functioning teams, that ultimately improve teamwork and patient safety. We know that high-performing teams have positive effects on both patient safety and staff-wellbeing.
Our friends at the University of Auckland have recently published a narrative review on the impact of teamwork and team performance through the lens of situation awareness. Situation awareness helps us to perceive cues in the clinical environment, interpret them, and predict how the situation may evolve. In the context of acute clinical care, situation awareness can be improved if the whole team actively contributes to monitoring the environment, processing information, and planning next steps.
Check out their review (below) and read about how team situation awareness can be maintained, and how this can create high-functioning teams and ultimately improve the safety of clinical care!
Teamwork matters: team situation awareness to build high-performing healthcare teams, a narrative review

Check out An ED Visit Like No Other, featured in the latest edition of the Australasian College of Paramedicine's Response magazine, where Mark Garner shines a spotlight on the role of paramedics during our trauma simulations as well as the important role they play in the Emergency Department.
"As the role of paramedics continues to diversify, it is important that they become more integrated into the emergency management teams, and the NetworkZ simulation training is an excellent way to do this in a non-threatening, safe, equitable environment. If you are offered the chance to participate in a NetworkZ training, I would highly recommend it. Not only will it count towards your CPD hours, but it will help to improve communication, relationships, and appreciation of the paramedic’s role in the overall healthcare system."
