Newbies Birkdale…
In light of the recent Flooding throughout Aotearoa, we have been having some very important conversations with nga tamariki. We feel it is important to acknowledge those who are struggling through these times alongside our children, as they begin to learn about the effects and impact such disastrous events can have on communities near and far. We as a teaching team, value affording our children the opportunity to be active participants in their own community by supporting those around them that are in need. Throughout our discussions, we asked the children how they might like to contribute to this cause and after some deliberation, they very thoughtfully came up with the idea of a bake sale! We think that our children could really benefit from working alongside one another to bring this idea to life. We intend on utilising Monday 6th March as our baking day where all of our wonderful children and their whānau can work together to create some delicious treats to sell within our community

Te Whāriki is the guiding document for early childhood education. One of its main strands is that of well-being. This strand seems very fitting at this time of uncertainty with what is going on in our world. Children need consistency and continuity in and out of the early childhood setting, and have the right to have their health and well-being protected. At Newbies we believe this encompasses reciprocal relationships with whanau, a good diet, good hygiene and making sure that our children’s emotional well-being is supported.
“The health and well-being of the child are protected and nurtured” Te Whāriki

This week there has been lots of painting happening at Newbies. Painting is a colour adventure for children. It enables the exploration of colour, provides choice with application, illuminates how colours can be mixed, and how colour can change. It is a truely magical medium.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up” Pablo Picasso

At Newbies we believe that all our children are capable, intelligent, imaginative and creative. To guide these beliefs we endeavour to provide a respectful environment that is stimulating and honours each child’s patterns of play. We want to enhance children’s imagination through the resources we provide, so we rotate the toys in our centre regularly to avoid overstimulation and source real materials for children to explore and do “real” work with.
“Play is the child, not the toy”

Newbies outdoor environment was made to bring nature into a non rural setting. Where children can be engrossed in streams, mud, gardens and greenery. Friedrich Frobel came up with the name Kindergarten in 1840. He visualised the importance of natural development in early education- a garden for children, and that teachers became the gardeners of children. We take pride in our personal natural environment at Newbies, but we also love immersing ourselves in our communities natural elements.

Creative play is said to be the highest form of play, and creativity is one of highest qualities of the human spirit. At Newbies we believe in providing magical art spaces in which our children can choose their own materials, and make their own creations in “their” way, so that they not only learn more about the medium and technique they have chosen. But also about themselves, and their world.
“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child” Pablo Picasso

The imagination is at its peak in early childhood. The human brain is the playground for imagination. The more children use their imagination the more creative, innovative, inventive and meaningful their play becomes. At Newbies we believe children need to be given the freedom to theorize and develop their own theories about the world around them. The imagination enables children brains to develop while they play.
“I doubt that the imagination can be suppressed. If you truly eradicated it in a child, he would grow up to be an eggplant” Ursula K. Le Guin.

Reading brings a sense of calm, and is a great way to develop speech and communication skills. It should never be a chore! We have lots of quiet cushioned areas at Newbies, which are perfect for solitary or group reading. It is never too early to start reading.
“In order to master the cultural literacy of reading the child needs two models:
1.) a person who is literate, and
2.) they need books” Penny Brownlee

This week Newbies celebrated a wonderful year of learning and fun together. The children had a fantastic time getting their faces painted and watching a magician that came to visit. We wish all our wonderful Newbies whanau a very Merry Christmas, and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year
