At the Beehive Early Learning Centre, we plan regular visits to the library. We believe that trips to places outside the centre can provide children with new experiences and increase their understanding of the world around them. It can also help children become more confident in social situations. We danced, listened to stories, and played some fun games at the Rānui public library. 😍🤩

We clearly have a vision in mind for each of the elements that we have added to our playground.

It is fun. It is educational. It is purposeful and provides lifelong learning too.

One of our precious projects is our rain water harvesting system. We decided that our tamariki should have individual access to water for outdoor play. Hence our outdoor water use is supplied by a rainwater tank in the middle of our playground. Our tamariki can fill up the container and take water when the tap is unlocked. They will know that when the water is gone, it’s gone, and we must wait for rain before they can start to use it again.

Look at all the fun we had making our colour potions and our recycled water squirters.

Messy play - Korihori pōrehe

Messy play gives children the opportunity to experience a wide range of sensory experiences. Look at our lemon volcanoes. Here, we used simple kitchen ingredients to make a colorful eruption. Messy play experiences support children to develop different ways to be creative and expressive and to actively explore with all their senses.

Can you see the bright colourful lava in our lemon volcanoes?

Can you smell the lemon and vinegar?

Can you imagine how much fun we had measuring, pouring, transferring, and smiling in awe, when the lemon volcanoes exploded?

The book, “seven kites of Matariki”, inspired the invitation to gather items from our backyard to play and create a kite. Māori kites (manu tukutuku) hold a special significance to signify the start of the Māori New Year. The Māori people use kites to maumahara (remember) those who have died by connecting Heaven and Earth. After we made our kite, we went for a run to the nearby park and our kite soared and flew in the wind.

Winter is here! And, it is the right time for a lemon harvest. When life gave us lemons, we chose to put in a little extra time and effort to share the lemons with our community. Off we went on a trip to the Ranui pātaka kai. Our enthusiastic little kaitiaki loved helping us pluck lemons from the tree to share. He was excited about the idea of picking the lemons from the bags and transferring it to the box up high in the pātaka kai. Ka pai!

This experience is deeply connected to our philosophy of manaakitanga not only for our people but for the world around us. As a learning centre, we will continue to support the health and wellbeing of our centre's community.♥️♥️
