Apollo Drive - a place where learning is authentic, intentional and noticeable. 💚

We believe the early years are about laying strong foundations for life. There is intention behind what we teach, how we teach it, and the experiences we provide for our tamariki.

Drawing on Montessori principles, our kaiako understand that young children learn best when they can experience concepts concretely before moving towards abstract understanding. Our curriculum resources are chosen and used with purpose, giving tamariki opportunities to touch, manipulate, explore, practise and make sense of ideas before representing them through numbers, symbols, letters and language.

Yes, we want our children to develop strong foundations in literacy, mathematics, science and the skills that will support them academically as they head to school. But being a successful learner is about so much more than academics.

It’s confidence. Independence. Resilience. Curiosity. Problem solving. Communication. Knowing how to ask questions, have a go, make mistakes and try again.

Our goal is that when our tamariki leave Apollo Drive for school, they take with them the tools, confidence and love of learning to become lifelong learners.

Because we aren’t just preparing children for school, we’re building the foundations for how they learn for life. 🌱

🌼 Celebrating Daffodil Day 💛

Our youngest tamariki embraced the spirit of Daffodil Day through a beautiful hands-on art experience. Using bright yellow paint, they explored creativity while painting daffodils on cardboard, developing their fine motor skills, sensory awareness, and self-expression.

These special creations remind us of the importance of kindness, hope, and supporting those affected by cancer. Every little handprint and brushstroke helped brighten our day while celebrating a meaningful cause.

Spreading kindness, sunshine, and smiles as we celebrate Daffodil Day! 💛🌼

Our tamariki have been exploring the meaning of giving back to the community through a range of fun, hands-on experiences. We have a donation box set up to support this wonderful cause, created beautiful daffodil-inspired flowers, and enjoyed imaginative play by making refreshing “lemon tea” together.

This afternoon, the tamariki will be getting slimed with a fun cornstarch slime activity as part of our Daffodil Day fundraising efforts.

Every little act of kindness makes a difference. Thank you to everyone supporting this meaningful cause! 💛

Our preschool tamariki have been exploring and practising letter recognition as they build their confidence and prepare for their exciting transition to school. Through engaging activities, discussions, and hands-on learning, they are developing their ability to identify letters, connect with sounds, and strengthen their language and literacy skills.

Every letter discovered is a step towards becoming confident, capable learners ready for their next learning journey.

At Apollo Drive learning isn’t solely for our tamariki, our Kaiako are learning too!

Kaiako Navdeep has been really interested in learning more about the Montessori approach. Kaiako Amie and Shannon have been working with this approach for many years and it’s wonderful to see our other Kaiako embrace this method of learning and want to learn more themselves.

Montessori activities go much deeper than simply teaching numbers or letters. We are teaching our tamariki both concrete and abstract concepts, while building independence, concentration, problem solving and skills that will support them throughout their lives.

For example, learning numbers isn’t just about recognising a number. We want our tamariki to understand what that number actually means. Being able to see it, touch it and physically work with quantities helps them build that understanding before moving onto more abstract learning.

There is so much intention behind what can sometimes look like a very simple activity 💛

Our Kaiako learning alongside our tamariki is pretty special too!

Sandpaper numbers help children develop muscular memory of each number’s shape, supporting number recognition while strengthening the small muscles needed for writing.
