Researchers from Utah University in the Family & Human Development field, came up with this tool for measuring conditional and unconditional self liking with interests in an individual's self esteem and personal success. It proved very useful and they recommended further research on the subject.

You can see this tool is based on how one perceives self. It is both our internal worlds and our external worlds that we can establish more health connections with by becoming aware of how we give and receive recognition.

We can do this by analysing our communication with others and with ourself. Examples:

Positive conditional: I like how you work with others, I think your hair looks nice
Positive unconditional: I like you, You are beautiful
Negative conditional: criticism - I think you write poorly, you could have made a better effort, you are a poor communicator
Negative unconditional: Ignoring, hitting, I don't like you

What sort of recognition did you receive today?

Freud believed repressed feelings, thoughts and desires are kept hidden in daily life but can sometimes surface in our dreams, when our defences are down and at other times when we feel safe enough to let our guard down. These can be very deep in our psyche, as the image metaphor shows, below our long term memory storage

In Psychotherapy a person will gradually discover the cause of their problems. Sometimes this conscious awareness happens quickly and other times deeper hidden secrets and other phenomena takes longer as the person goes deeper into their self, their internal world
