Welcome to Aorere College

Aorere College has been serving its local community for almost 50 years. Students are the heart of our school and they continue to enjoy success across the wide range of opportunities on offer. A clear academic priority ensures that

students are achieving to their potential in their learning programmes. Every student is expected to gain the qualifications that will allow them to progress into further learning after schooling - whether at university or other tertiary providers. To complement this academic focus, the school offers comprehensive programmes in the performing arts as well as sporting and cultural activities. Many students enjoy the opportunity to represent their school outside the classroom with a number going on to gain national recognition in their chosen area. We provide a safe and caring environment to which our students want to belong. Our motto "virtus caelum recludit" ( character opens the way to the heavens) reflects the overall goal of the college in building young men and women of character, aspiring to the greatest heights in their own achievement, yet still prepared to serve the wider community. Afghan Language Week

Salām! سلام

What a wonderful week of language, culture, connection and celebration as we recognised Afghan Language Week at Aorere College last week.

Throughout the week, our Afghan ākonga proudly shared parts of their culture with our school community. We enjoyed Afghan hospitality, a cultural photo booth with traditional clothing and jewellery, beautiful henna, Dari language learning, cultural displays, and traditional dance performances.

A special highlight was seeing our students share Hazaragi dance and Attan, with students and staff joining the Attan circle and celebrating together. Our staff also got involved through daily cultural challenges — exploring Afghan music, learning about the culture, and even using AI to creatively bring Afghanistan and Aotearoa together.

Our Afghan student community may be small, but the pride, energy and spirit they brought to the week was huge. It was wonderful to see our ākonga confidently sharing their language and culture and our wider Aorere whānau embracing the opportunity to learn, participate and connect.

A huge tashakur to our Afghan students for sharing a piece of who they are with us, and to our staff and students for supporting and celebrating alongside them.

MACBETH!

Our recent trip to the ASB Waterfront Theatre in the Auckland C*D offered 136 of our Year 12 students a valuable opportunity to see their studied text brought to life on stage. For many, this was their first time attending a live theatrical production, and their engagement was remarkable.

Student responses were positive, noting the performance’s intensity, humour, and unique staging while drawing comparisons between the written work and its live adaptation. Students also enjoyed being able to walk around Silo Park area near the theatre and have lunch with their classmates. Throughout the entire day, the students demonstrated exceptional behaviour and maturity, representing our school well.

Music is a vital strand of Tongan Culture

Fakamalo atu ki he kau tauhi fanau hono kotoa 'i ho'o mou kau mai ke tau fakafiefia'i 'a 'e tau uike Lea Faka-Tonga.

Our week started with a Hymn and a Prayer led by the Amatakiloa Tongan Bilingual Unit, followed by the flag-raising ceremony, led by Tevita Fononga, Viliami Pau'u, and Simione Telefoni.

Day 2 was a day to relax and listen to some of Tonga's finest musicians as Mr Telefoni played hiva faka-Tonga during break times as we prepared for a long evening ahead with our Academic Conferences. A group of Tongan student leaders also had the privilege to attend a Tongan Ta'ovala workshop at Mangere East Library.

Day 3 teachers celebrated with a morning tea all prepared by our amazing Tongan staff. Mr Telefoni, Mr Toutai, Mr Tupou, Miss Kauvalu, Mrs Ahomana, Mr Makalio, Mr Malamala, Miss Ngaluafe and Miss Fakafanua. Staff were very pleased with the spread; it was a great boost for another day of conferences.

Day 4 was a day of amazing performances. Assembly was led by the Amatakiloa Tongan Bilingual unit with a Hymn, Prayer, National Anthem and a Hiva Usu all prepared by the Talented Mr Malamala and the Master Musician Mr Telefoni. The assembly ended with great performances which then carried on into 2nd break with some more great performances from all year levels outside Mala'e Pasefika. It was a beautiful way to end the week with our families joining us to celebrate. We thank you all for your love and support.

Year 10 P-Tech IT Taster

What do fingerprinting, shoeprint matching and chromatography have in common with Digital Technologies? Problem-solving!

At last week’s Year 10 P-Tech IT Taster, students took on a whodunnit challenge, analysing clues and evidence to work out who was responsible for the crime. Their investigation involved fingerprinting, matching shoeprints and using chromatography (to analyse ink samples) to help uncover the culprit.

While it might not have looked like a typical IT activity, the challenge was designed to give students a taste of the problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking and analytical skills that are at the heart of Digital Technologies.

A great way to experience how IT skills can be applied in unexpected and creative ways!

What is P-Tech?

P-Tech (Pathways in Technology) is a 3-5 year programme designed to support students into IT study and careers. Funded by the Ministry of Education, the programme helps address New Zealand’s growing digital skills shortage by giving students opportunities to develop industry-relevant skills and explore pathways into the technology sector.

Students interested in pursuing an IT pathway can choose L1PTE or L2PTE, with L3PTE available for students continuing from L2PTE.

A great opportunity for students to discover that a career in IT is about much more than computers. It’s about solving problems, thinking creatively and working together to find solutions.

Year 13 Business Students Shine at YES Market Day

Our Year 13 Business students recently had the opportunity to take part in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Market Day at Karanga Plaza.

Five Business groups represented our school, each bringing along their own products, stall decorations and business ideas. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to put their classroom learning into practice by marketing, selling and engaging with real customers in a busy market environment.

The Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) allows high school students to experience what it is like to start and run their own business. Students develop a business idea, create and market a product or service, manage finances, work as a team and gain valuable real-world business experience throughout the year.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and did a great job showcasing their products and interacting with customers. Special congratulations to one of our groups, Ka'ii Boards, who were awarded Best Marketers!

It was a valuable learning experience and a great opportunity for our students to develop their entrepreneurial, communication, teamwork and marketing skills beyond the classroom.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our students and helped make the day a success!
