We combine some of our favourite things: the ocean, breathwork and meditation for these once a month experiences that are an absolute delight for your nervous system.

An extension from our walking meditation we have timed these sessions with high tide at Cheltenham Beach so we can spend some time immersed in the cool water after a walking meditation and an energising breathwork session together. Walking meditation has been used in many different traditions as a way to cultivate mindfulness and access the presence always available to us in everyday activities.

The practice involves very deliberating contemplation about and doing a series of actions that you normally do automatically. Before the practice we will break down the components of each step and give the students clear instruction. After the walking meditation we will breathe together before slipping into the ocean for a contemplative immersion in the cool water.

We meet at the Bath Street Reserve at the North End of Cheltenham Beach at 8:00AM. Please be ready in your swimming attire for the walk and meditation to aid a seamless entry into the water. You may like to sit on a towel, and bring any beach accoutrements you may need.

The Four Pillars of SOMM

At SOMM, we believe true well-being supports the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being human. Our approach is grounded in four interconnected pillars: Meditation & Awareness, Breathwork, Yoga, and Plant Medicine. Together, these practices cultivate presence, resilience, emotional well-being, and a deeper connection to ourselves, others, and nature.

Each modality draws from ancient wisdom traditions now increasingly supported by modern science as powerful tools for creating greater inner coherence and awareness.

✨Meditation & Awareness: Awareness is the foundation of everything we do. Before we can change our habits, relationships, or inner world, we first need the ability to notice them. Meditation helps create space between stimulus and reaction, allowing us to respond to life with greater clarity, compassion, and intention.

✨Breathwork is a direct pathway into the body and nervous system. Through conscious breathing, we can shift state, access emotion and energy, release tension, and move beyond the busy thinking mind into a deeper experience of presence and self-connection.

✨Yoga & Mindful Movement build strength, flexibility, and awareness while helping regulate our emotional and energetic states. These practices invite us to slow down, listen inwardly, and cultivate a deeper relationship between body and mind.

✨Plant Medicine: We approach plant medicine with respect, education, and intention. Certain plant medicines have been used for centuries to support healing, insight, and shifts in consciousness. We’re interested in the thoughtful and responsible exploration of these modalities, particularly in how they may deepen self-awareness and support meaningful inner change.

Breathwork Fundamentals is our foundational breathwork course. At SOMM, we bring breathwork back into a relationship with awareness, nervous system regulation, and meditation. We are not interested in breathwork purely for intensity or peak experience. Instead, we focus on understanding what is happening in your system, choosing practices intentionally, and building capacity over time.

Your facilitator is Amanda Wright, a Breathwork Coach, Qi Gong teacher, and facilitator, and the founder of Breathe Wright — a global wellness platform dedicated to nervous system regulation, embodied presence, and holistic wellbeing.

At The School of Modern Meditation SOMM, we believe meditation is more than a technique. It’s a path of awareness, emotional maturity, compassion, and most importantly, conscious participation in the world.
