When Sophie Chung’s home was damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle, she visited our Flooring Xtra Mount Eden store to begin her renovation journey.

Her main design priority was striking a balance between quality and not overcapitalising. A significant portion of the budget went into essential but unglamorous work—new roof, walls, ceilings, a retaining wall, and re-levelling uneven floors. As an ’80s build, the home required a complete overhaul.

Sophie was intentional about not compromising on the details that shape ambience, like lighting, or everyday touchpoints that require long term durability such as; "tapware, light switches, and flooring". It was a challenging brief, but we think she absolutely nailed it - creating a space that feels elevated while staying budget-conscious.

Our design vision for the beach house was centered around durability and a timeless appeal. Since we hope to keep it for generations, choosing long-lasting materials was essential. I combined my love of mid-century style with modern touches, using a palette of 70s-inspired colours, classic furniture, and durable finishes. The result is a home that feels both nostalgic and enduring - everything came together organically.⁠
