What is involved in one of our sessions?
In short, every session is different because every student's needs are different.
At their core, our sessions are focussed around developing confidence alongside ability. We use the curriculum expectations as a framework to try to best prepare students for upcoming assessments. This can involve students bringing in their school work, homework or doing past papers. We also use their school outlines to look at what is coming up for students too - preparing them for what is next to ensure that topics covered in class are no longer unfamiliar to them and they can get a head start when they start something new.
We believe that most importantly with tuition is that a student connects to a tutor's teaching style - everyone learns differently and deserves to have someone explain concepts to them in a way that works. We work with our students to understand how they learn best and ensure that we take their lead when outlining new topics.

Small pieces of knowing disguise a wider understanding - if you know where to look!
Rote learning times tables is something that we are taught to do throughout our primary years but something that is often missed is discussions around how to apply this knowledge and show students how to become more 'in-depth' learners.
Looking at the broader picture and teaching students to break down questions and dissect out the 'why' behind we do things allows their minds to open up to become more curious learners.
At a simple level, this question, 6x6 = 36 is a small piece of knowledge that students can regurgitate, but once we open it up, we can explore just some of the numerous pieces of learning that branch off from a simple question, reminding us to look deeper!

With the latest set of lockdowns, a number of schools have shifted their mock exams closer towards the end of the year or cancelled them altogether, but final exams won’t and can’t be delayed forever. It also means that the feedback that students would normally get from their mock exams on what they do and don’t know isn’t being delivered with meaningful timing, making it all the more tricky to specifically target their knowledge gaps before the end of the year.
This time of year is primarily where students have the opportunity to refine and solidify their knowledge before the end of the year, but this has been made that much more difficult with online schooling making it harder for teachers to tailor their lessons or explanations to each individual student.
We have jumped online and are still delivering support to our students throughout Level 4 and Level 3. If you or your child is at all worried as they head towards their end of year exams or would like to make sure they reach their potential, feel free to reach out to see what we can do to support them.

Tutorial Time!
Exponential graphs are introduced as students in Year 11 work towards NCEA Standard 1.3 - their external assessment involving Tables, Graphs and Equations.
One of the trickiest concepts to grasp is how to find the equation from the graph alone. While this may seem daunting to start off, its actually only a few simple steps and all about finding your three unknowns - a, b and c.

Happy Start of Term 3! All the best to students and families getting back into the swing of the school routine!
Check out our blog on why Term 3 is such a critical term to get student's learning solidified as they head towards their end of year examinations and assessments.
Importance of Term 3 - Exam and Assessment Preparation
The start of Term 3 may represent the mid-point through the year, however, realistically it is the term where students begin the downward stretch to their final end of year examinations. Here, knowledge from term 1 and 2 is not only consolidated but built upon and extended. Term 4 examinations begin...
