I recently had the opportunity to guest lecture at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington on the topic of Transnational Insurgency and Migrants. The lecture focused on how modern conflicts increasingly extend beyond national borders through migration routes, refugee spaces, and border economies. We discussed how displacement is not simply an outcome of violence, but part of the terrain through which insurgencies adapt and persist. At the same time, we reflected on how migrants navigate these conditions, thereby subtly reshaping conflict environments.
These conversations highlighted the close relationship between teaching and research. Engaging with students offers a space to think carefully and collaboratively about questions that continue to evolve beyond the classroom.
I am thankful to VWU for the invitation and for the thoughtful engagement throughout the session. - Wisdom Oghosa Iyekekpolo

In my new publication, I show how civilian protection practitioners can integrate both R2P and CT regimes with local networks to provide a holistic strategy. This approach encompasses international, state, and local agency in halting the proliferation and activities of violent non-state groups. I espouse a framework for the protection of vulnerable Nigeria populations based on three factors – community self-protection, economic well-being, and ideological reorientation.

Bridging the Norms of Counter-Terrorism and Responsibility to Protect: Countering the Proliferation and Activities of Armed Groups in Nigeria Abstract How do we achieve the protection of vulnerable civilians from violent non-state actors in Nigeria?
