This Tuesday, our preschool children went to Auckland War Memorial Museum to join their Matariki program.
The Matariki story opened with tamariki participating in a play detailing the separation of Ranginui and Papatuānuku, leading into an introduction to the multiple reasons we celebrate Matariki and how we do it. Presented within Hotunui (the Museum’s Whare,) we acknowledged Matariki as one of the many star clusters guiding our ancestors to these lands. Next, we embarked on an imaginary ocean voyage, visiting each star in the cluster according to where it sits in the constellation, and tuning the keen senses of our ancestors, we created sound memos to describe the domain cared for by each star in the cluster.
We also visited the new Stories of Auckland gallery and Weird & Wonderful gallery and had a lot of fun.

Today we got the fantastic opportunity of walking to Mitre MEGA 10 Westgate to see what kind of construction tools and materials we could find, we were very lucky to get an outstanding amount of support from Mitre 10’s Adrian and Greg. The tamariki were so excited to follow Greg’s wonderful guide and ask him lots of questions, as the tamariki are very interested in all things construction currently. While we were there we even got some fancy goody bags to bring back to the centre. We will construct the small building project from the goody bag next week. Nga mihi to Westgate Mitre 10 team, it is fantastic to be able to have these wonderful connections within our local community and to let our tamariki have such a lovely and educational visit!

In May, we found that almost all our preschool children were fascinated to read the book ‘the very hungry caterpillar’, so we have changed our learning focus to this book. Today we have done some activities to extend children's learning and interest in this book and caterpillars. For example, writing child’s own name to feed the caterpillar, chomping and munching through the fruit shapes using a caterpillar hole punch, painting paper plate caterpillar, making play dough caterpillars and counting circles of caterpillars’ bodies. During mat-time, we retold the story and also talked about the letter C🙋. We all had a busy but fun day😎
