School Readiness-Numeracy: Ocean number bonds
Yesterday, our tamariki revisited their addition skills through an ocean-themed "Add the Room" activity, exploring the environment to find addition cards, count sea creatures, and solve number problems.
They also explored number bonds, discovering different ways numbers can be made using counters and hands-on materials. Through these experiences, tamariki practised counting, addition, problem-solving, and worked together to share their mathematical thinking.

This week, our tamariki have been busy exploring the changing seasons as we begin our journey into our new winter topic.
The children had lots of fun creating their own “snow” and enjoying touching, mixing, and experimenting with different materials. Through this sensory experience, they worked alongside their friends, and discovered new textures together.
We also explored nature by using a variety of materials to create beautiful bird nests. The children carefully arranged and built their nests, showing creativity along the way.
It has been wonderful to see our tamariki learning through hands on experience while developing their curiosity about the world around them. We are excited to continue our winter adventure in the coming weeks!

Celebrating International Day of Families in the Kawakawa Room. 💕

Our youngest tamariki had a wonderful time celebrating the International Day of Families by learning about the special people in their lives. Through a fun and meaningful hands on activity, the tamariki explored family connections by sticking paper dolls that represented each of their family members into their little houses. 🏠

The tamariki proudly looked at their family photos, recognized their loved ones, and engage so happily in the activity. Experiences like these help foster a strong sense of belonging, identity, and connection between home and the centre. 🌱

This week for school readiness, tamariki explored a hands-on science experiment using pine cones to investigate how weather can affect nature. Children observed the pine cones closely, looking carefully at the tiny seeds hidden inside before making predictions about what might happen when the pine cones were placed in water.
As the pine cones slowly began to close, we discussed how pine cones help protect and keep their seeds safe during wet weather, then open again when the weather becomes dry. Tamariki were curious and excited to notice these changes, developing their observation, prediction, and scientific thinking skills through this autumn science experience. Mother nature is amazing!

Our tamariki have been exploring Autumn through a variety of hands on art experiences. Using recycled materials, collected leaves, and natural resources, children created their own hedgehogs while learning about the season around us.
We also explored painting in different ways by using forks as brushes, giving children opportunity to experiment with textures, lines, and patterns.
Throughout these activities, children showed curiosity, creativity and confidence while expressing their own ideas through art and play 🍁🍂🦔

Today, tamariki explored early numeracy concepts using ten frames through a fun “family picnic” scenario. Children imagined different families coming together and used counters to represent each group, combining them to find out how many people there were altogether.
As they worked through the activity, tamariki practised one-to-one counting, recognising numbers, and simple addition by adding more people to the picnic. They were also encouraged to explain their thinking and check their answers together. This experience supported their developing understanding of number concepts in a meaningful and engaging way, while connecting to our ongoing family theme.

Last week, our tamariki enjoyed a special Mother’s Day’s literacy together. We read the classic story, My Mum, and shared their thoughts about the special people in their lives. After the story, children created Mother’s Day cards and completed the sentence “I love my mum because…” by drawing pictures and sharing their own ideas.

Through this experience, tamariki practised expressing their thoughts and emotions, developing early literacy skills, and building confidence in communicating meaningful messages. The activity also encouraged reflection on love, appreciation, and family connections.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and our little artists in the Kawakawa Room have been busy creating something special for their mums. Our tamariki worked so hard on their beautiful flower painting, showing wonderful focus, concentration, and creativity throughout the experience. These precious creations are more than just paintings, they are little expressions of love from tiny hands to the amazing mothers in their lives.

School readiness - How could we help bee and wasp in the winter?

Today, tamariki extended their learning by completing the book we made earlier, thinking about how we can help bees and wasps during the colder season. Tamariki shared their ideas by drawing what they could do, such as planting flowers or making bee hotels.
As they took turns to come out and share their drawings, tamariki practised speaking in front of others, listening respectfully, and building confidence in expressing their thoughts. This experience supported their sense of empathy, their understanding of caring for living things, and the development of important social skills in a group setting.
