My tīpuna had a deep relationship with the ocean, and every time I enter it, I feel that connection too.

There’s something about being in the water that brings me back to myself.

The moment I go under, the worries, the stress, the noise of life just seem to disappear.

And I think there’s something incredibly healing about water. It cleanses, restores and reconnects us.

What an honour to MC the Youth Peace Symposium. ❤️

Sometimes it’s hard to feel hopeful about the state of our world.

But listening to these intelligent, passionate and articulate young people, unafraid to ask the hard questions, reminded me:

This is what hope looks like 🕊️

A couple of years ago, I met Timmy in an op-shop in Ellerslie.

We hit it off straight away, and soon realised we were both Whakatōhea. When she told me she had never been to her marae, I knew one day we had to make it happen.

So I invited her home for Tohekura in Ōpōtiki.

And this year, she finally stood on her marae for the first time.

No words can fully explain the connection, the aroha, and the wairua of that moment. These are the moments I treasure, supporting wāhine to reconnect with their whenua, their whakapapa, and their tuakiri Māori.

We finished with a pure in the moana, the perfect way to whakakapi such a special day.

Ever had that moment when someone says, “You can lead the waiata!” and suddenly you’re wishing the floor would swallow you up? 😅

I know that feeling.

Before I started my own haerenga learning waiata Māori, I didn’t always feel confident either.

But I learned that confidence doesn’t come from already knowing everything. It comes from having a safe place to learn, practise, understand your voice, and give it a go.

That’s exactly why I created Waiata 101.

A supportive space for you to learn waiata, strengthen your voice and build the confidence to join in, or even take the lead, without that whakamā holding you back.

Because next time the waiata bus comes along… I want you sitting confidently in the driver’s seat.

What if you’re not “bad at singing”?

What if you’ve just never had the right support, tools, or space to discover what your voice can actually do?

Waiata101 is a safe, encouraging space filled with aroha, practical vocal training, and waiata designed to help you build confidence and grow your voice without fear of getting it wrong.

Your voice might surprise you. 🎶

Some childhood memories just stick with you 😂❤️

Mum eating fish heads and sucking on the eyeballs was definitely one of mine.

I thought it was yuck then… and I still do 😅

But now it’s one of those little things that feels like home, whānau and Matariki.

I love you Mum! ❤️
