Moving to Auckland to attend university was a big step for Manawaru Broughton (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Te Aitanga a Mahaki) who grew up in Gisborne and is now enrolled in a Bachelor of Business and looking to one day start his own business.
“During my last year in school I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to university. I was working as a bartender and would probably still be working there if I hadn’t gone to uni. I was pretty close to the owner and talked to him about all my business ideas. But once I realised how much I loved business I decided to study it at uni and come to AUT. My mum encouraged me to go to uni, and my school told me about the McDonald’s Scholarship, which I was lucky enough to receive. Being able to study fees free for a year made university more attractive too.”

Kia kaha e ngā uri o Te Tai Tokerau!
Kia kaha e ngā uri o Te Tai Tokerau! Privileged to support some of our Far North future leaders at their Pōwhiri at AUT - Auckland University of Technology this morning.
They represent a larger number of Far Northerners who leave for study. I appreciated the kōrero from the taumata, fill your kete, then bring those skills back home!
All the best to all of our Far North students heading away for uni or to further themselves! We'll be supporting from up north ❤️

Today ngā whānau Māori ki AUT - Auckland University of Technology celebrated pride month and a new children's book by Dr Tangaroa Paul, illustrated by Rebecca Gibbs in collaboration with Auckland Libraries - Ngā Pātaka Kōrero o Tāmaki Makaurau and Oratia Books.
Dr. Tangaroa Paul’s first book, Rere Atu Taku Poi! Let my Poi Fly! is a bilingual children’s book inspired by Tangaroa's experience of moving from performing in the male kapa haka line to performing with wāhine, a huge step towards joy and self-acceptance. Written in te reo Māori and with a translation by the author, Rere Atu Taku Poi! is a beautifully illustrated story about gender fluidity in a school setting.
"It is actually here at AUT that I felt most comfortable to be myself, being allowed the space to navigate the space to figure out who I am in order to contribute in service to our people and our communities that I belong to." - Dr Tangaroa Paul
