Mo ngā mātua tauhou, he whakamārama pai tēnei o ngā āhuatanga o te Kōhanga reo.
For parents who haven’t had tamariki in kohanga before, this is a great explanation about what it is like to be in kohanga reo.
If you are on a waitlist, learning about the commitment & being able to show your commitment may help to get you in the door 🤷🏽♀️
As a Kōhanga reo graduate and a current whānau member, here is my 5cents on Kōhanga Reo 💚

Tena koutou e te iwi. Kua kapi a matou kuaha mo te wiki nei. Ko Te Matatini te kaupapa! Ka tu a matou kaimahi ki runga i te atamira!
He panui ano, he wahi mokopuna ki te Matatini, ki runga ra, he wāhi whakatā mo ratou.
We are closed this week as te iwi Māori comes together to celebrate excellence in kapahaka and all things beautiful in Te Ao Māori. Also to allow our kaimahi who are kaihaka to prepare, stand and experience this week. If you have any enrolment queries, please email us or message us and we’ll reply as soon as we can next week.
Also, if you are attending Te Matatini with under 5s, there is a mokopuna lounge in the corporate box area called Matarīriki, being run by Te Kōhanga Reo Trust. Not suited for prams but otherwise a good space for your tamariki to chill, away from everything else going on.
Mauri ora

Ko wai matou?
Hītori o Te Kohanga Reo
Te Kōhanga Reo o Pomaria was established in 1992 in one of the classrooms of Pomaria School. In 1999 the Kōhanga buildings were opened and we have been a part of the school community ever since. We acknowledge those who put in their own putea and a lot of effort to establish our Kōhanga: Papa Sam Paniora (Kaumatua), Queenie Stevens (Kaiwhakahaere), Eddie Gillies (kaiarahi mo te whanau), Miriama Gillies (Kaiako)
Te Kaupapa
Te Kōhanga Reo Movement: In the 1970’s it was realised that our language and customs were being lost. A national hui was held whereby kaumatua and kuia united to find a solution to revive our language. From these hui Te Kōhanga Reo – the language nest was developed. The thinking was that in the bossom of their whanau, mokopuna would be nurtured in the language of their tupuna. We stand tall and proud celebrating the richness that being Māori offers.
Ngā Pou e Whā: Total immersion Te Reo Māori, Whanau Whakahaere (whanau make decisions and manage the Kōhanga), Tu Tika Tu Pono (Accountability), Whaioranga (no smoking, health & wellness).
