Warm Pacific greetings on a cold Auckland day 🥶. We are back!

It's that time of the year again. It is with great pleasure that we announce that SSTS will be hosting a ball in 2024. Our inaugural ball last year was a huge success and we expect this year’s ball to be no less. Thank you to our amazing Ball Committee, working relentlessly under the careful guidance of our wonderful staff members, Kim Geddes and Rana Rodney.

What a great school Ball 👌. All credit to the hard working committee that went above and beyond. The kids sure scrubbed up well - couldn’t recognise most of them 😂

SSTS Teamwork at it's best:

Flo (Student Engagement Officer) and Hemoata (Humanities lecturer) identified a need: SSTS needs a sturdy notice board.

Melvin (STEAM lecturer) and Rob Tuwhare (Construction lecturer) consulted with each other on the design.

Melvin and his STEAM class came up with a prototype (pic below) that factored in the balance and safety. This required many hours of mathematics and physics in the STEAM class. They produced a prototype that can be used for future projects.

Rob and his Construction class built the notice board to specifications. All resources used were materials easily available onsite, with no added costs.

The outcome: A sturdy, attractive, safe and serviceable notice board on wheels to ensure easy movement around SSTS.

Future plans: The STEAM class hope to create a remote control so that SLT can move the board as needed without too much physical effort.

Our SSTS Sports PTP class had an adventurous and exciting day out at Piha Beach, West Auckland. Here are some of the highlights of their day. The last picture shows one of our students, Rana, helping an elderly tourist from Sweden to cross the waterfall at Piha. He is such a caring young man, as are many of our students. They had a wonderful day out 😊.

Samoan Language Week at SSTS
This year's theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week is Fa’aāuāu le Folauga i le Va’a o Tautai - Continue the Voyage with Competent Wayfinders of the Ocean.
As part of this year’s overarching theme of ‘Sustainability’, the Samoan community chose a theme that would reflect the journey of language revitalisation and maintenance as well as recognising the importance of having the right tools, good leadership skills, relationships and the correct medium (va’a) that is adaptable to faring the ocean and its elements.
This year marks 12 years since Samoa Language Week has been celebrated in Aotearoa New Zealand. Following on from 2021, Samoa Language Week 2022 is led by three key organisations – FAGASA, Fotu ō Malama and SAASIA.
2022 is also a significant year for the Samoan community, being the 60th anniversary of Samoa Independence. Communities are organising activities to commemorate this milestone, which coincides with Samoa Language Week.
Samoa has a unique historical relationship with New Zealand. It is the only nation that New Zealand has a Treaty of Friendship. The Treaty of Friendship between Samoa and New Zealand is about a commitment to partnership, friendship and a mutual endeavour to obtain for Tagata Samoa fuller opportunities for social progress. Language is critical in achieving this.

CONGRATULATIONS to our wonderful Noelene Dunn from SSTS who has received an MIT award in Teaching Excellence for her use of rewindable teaching and learning resources. We at SSTS are so proud of her and our students are very privileged to have her as a teacher.
