Feeling excited πŸ’• - I was able to secure a copy of this NAMTA journal from an eBay seller in Texas USA - with the help of some family we got it to Aotearoa/NZ with the precision of a smuggling run πŸ˜‚

We are so fortunate that NAMTA articles are now freely available on the AMI website but there’s nothing like sitting down with a cup of tea and a book in hand (and it’s still cold enough in the evenings to snuggle up on the couch in front of the fire πŸ’•πŸ’•)

Consciously creating our best life everyday πŸ’•πŸ’•

Our dancers are complete πŸ’•πŸ’•

One of the most beautiful parts of making and remaking materials is that each time is an opportunity to reflect on the aim of the material.

Because we know the aim for these visual mobiles is to be an aid to visual development for the young baby - freedom and limits in our material making become clear.

A limit would be avoiding over stimulation of the baby - so we only combined two colours in each mobile (blue and silver, green and gold etc) and we don’t have too many components - so four dancers is enough.

Freedom came in the way we hung the final product - dowels for a symmetrical finish, wire for a more cascading effect and one of our participants chose to hang her mobile from twigs - resulting in the beautiful effect of dancing under a tree πŸ’•πŸ’•

Now is a good time to reflect on how making your own materials deepens your understanding of important principles πŸ’•πŸ’• (This is something you can’t buy from Temu or get in a catalogue).

Did you know that these kinds of Montessori materials for infants and toddlers are all designed to support the development and coordination of movement and concentration.

The colours are irrelevant at this stage of development. So the material can be brightly coloured or natural wood without making a difference to the child’s activity.

As the child moves into their third year of life, we notice they will naturally begin matching up the colours, but it is not the goal of this material.

Understanding the purpose of materials helps us to be an aid to development and not an obstacle (ie we don’t need to correct the children if they mix up the colours - when they are ready, the matching will naturally happen).

Our beautiful resident bantam hens - what can I say we just love them so much πŸ’•πŸ’•

We are making dancers today - such a subtle point of interest in the environment for the baby.

Designed to move gently with the airflow of the environment mobiles like this support visual development much like lying under a tree with the leaves blowing gently in the breeze.

We can place the mobile near the baby, so they have a choice to look at it or not πŸ’•πŸ’•

A lot of us might question whether mobiles are really needed - after all it is true that babies will discover their hands and feet, and there are already many things in the environment to gaze upon.

We can see the use of visual mobiles as an addition to the child’s natural life not as a replacement for - time spent in nature, time spent exploring their own body, gazing at the faces of loved ones and noticing the environment that surrounds them πŸ’•πŸ’•

Just two little friends (who have grown together from before birth πŸ’•) bathing their feet after being out in the muddy grass.

At Aroha Nui Montessori we don’t offer β€œmessy play” options as part of our rhythm - we just live a real life - one that is full of nature, cooking, cleaning and art.

A warm scented foot bath (fully supervised) may be one of the most restorative moments in our day πŸ’•πŸ’•
