Pennie joined us in January with her newly hatched chicks Peppermint Patty and Harriet.
We’ve been waiting… and today received our first egg of the season 💕💕
We just adore our little bantam beauties! They inconspicuously go about their day and bring us great joy and we observe them, feed them and now we will be able to gather eggs 💕💕
Practical life is real life 🤩

Our 2026 song project is well underway with 25 songs uploaded to our YouTube channel.
Our goal is to share a few familiar favourites but more importanly a range of lesser known songs that we love singing with our community of toddlers.
We also wanted to shine the light on some amazing artists we have here in Aotearoa NZ.
In our website shop you will find song cards that we have created - all free and easy to download. There is a blurb for most songs sharing where I found it, what we love most about it and links to the artist wherever possible - we want to you head to the source.
I love singing and sharing songs with children and we hope that you will too.

Food preparation is all about bravery (the toddlers and ours) and extends beyond the kitchen.
In our environment, we have been introduced to a new vegetable - The choko!
One of our wonderful families has been bringing in choko growing in their grandfathers garden to share with us.
I mentioned bravery above! Choko is not something I have tried before, and while I didn’t know it until I asked my mother this week it’s a vegetable that was purposely not part of my upbringing - she screwed up her face and said “no way am I eating choko!”
My curiosity was piqued!! I asked her how she had had it before - and the answer was steamed with a white sauce - the way her mother had prepared it when she was a child!
We have been roasting our choko with olive oil and a very light dusting of herb salt. Our. Choko “chips” are actually quite delicious and I’m so happy. I was brave enough to follow our generous families lead and give them a try. 💕💕
NB this is not a vegetable. I would include on the food preparation shelf - when raw the choko has a latex like it and it is recommended to cut underwater or cook the vegetable whole as it’s not great on your skin. Because of the sap if you’re introducing it as a language item, it should be supervised (as it wouldn’t be good for children who are still putting things in their mouth for exploration).
💕 Our 2026 song project is well underway with song 22 - I Te Hōtoke by Sean O'Connor - published on our youtube channel today and our free downloadable song card with the lyrics is up on our website shop and more links to Sean O'Connor's work - if you have an interest in whakatauki, Māori proverbs, made into simple songs (round singing) then he is your place to visit!

We already mentioned not all two year olds need naps but downtime is still so beneficial and how can we achieve this for children who never seem to sit still?
Exploring art materials can be deeply immersive - we take a deep breath in as we explore and allow creation to flow forth.
NB my presence here anchors the child’s energy, we have made space to be with each other, we chatted and took time to just be!
Many people do not believe toddlers and two year olds are capable of sustained and concentrated “work” but our painting session lasted well over 20 minutes - long enough to refuel our spirits 💕💕
I limit my creativity to the child’s developmental level when working alongside like this, as around this stage children can begin asking us to draw/create for them. Today I filled my page with colour and this way I am role modelling skills like wetting the brush, activating the paint and applying colour to the paper - there will be other times when I can role model my best artistic work ☺️
