It's birth trauma awareness week and the below letter from Carla Sergeant summarises the state of midwifery in NZ.

I have been fortune enough to have great midwives for both of my pregnancies but I still suffered birth trauma with Caleb for several reasons.

Having hypnobirthing in my tool belt this time really gives me confidence for my upcoming birth.

Being empowered with information around your rights for your birth is so important.

This is an interesting read!

Personally I didn't find my antenatal class this bad however it was lacking in a lot of the post birth information/advice and some birth information too.

I was lucky to have a great antenatal group who stayed in touch afterwards which was wonderful for building my village.

I've found that a lot of parents end up finding their post birth advice from professionals on Instagram/Facebook or books.

I definitely feel that there needs to be more education out there for parents.

I'm grateful that my hypnobirthing course helps those who are wanting more education than what a standard antenatal course provides. I teach techniques that I wish I had learnt for my first birth and I feel are a real game changer for those who are about to have a baby.

Some people even just do hypnobirthing without doing an antenatal class because they feel so prepared for their birth after the hypnobirthing course.

Opinion: Nothing can prepare you for parenthood, but I’m sure there's more that can be done than practising putting a nappy on a plastic doll.
