Good evening everyone!
Our club meeting is at 6:30 this Thursday at the temporary venue of Anchorage Park Community House (Map below). The temporary address is: 16 Swan Crescent, Pakuranga.
I just found out that the car park will be closed and scaffolding up for painting of the building, so we'll just have to park down the roadside, and do our best.
Bring your trees to work on - as usual there is lots of cleaning and pruning to do at the moment.
Topic of the month again is "Deciduous" - Bring along any colouring up tree you have to show off. It would also be great if you can give a quick chat about how you maintain and look after it, what conditions it loves etc. so we can all learn as well.
Unfortunately because of the poor weather forecast this weekend, we have had to postpone the carving workshop to a later date. We will let you know as soon as we know when this is going ahead!
FYI Auckland Bonsai Society's Annual show is being held 13-14 June at Kumeu Community Centre. The event is now live on Eventbrite, tickets can be bought through the web page.
Samuel Thompson from Australia will be the main demonstrator, along with a selection of known and new NZ demonstrators: Brendon Covich, Matt Hutson, Adrian Bird, Martin Walters, Rob Addis and Zianne Van Zyl.
Entry to the general show is $10 (+ processing fees), and if you want to attend the demonstrations they are about $150/day. There are also workshops being held with Samuel, so make sure to check this out on Eventbrite web site.

Good afternoon everyone!
The EBC March meeting is this Thursday evening at 6:30, but there is an important change of venue to note:
NEW VENUE FOR APPROX 3 MONTHS
As the usual clubrooms are undertaking maintenance, we have been moved to Anchorage Park Community House for about the next 3 months. The new address is: 16 Swan Crescent, Pakuranga. (See attached map). I will confirm the venue each month.
Bring some trees to work on like usual. There's no shortage of maintenance to be done with your trees at the moment - a lot of pruning / setting up good growth for next year etc. to be done....
Topic of the month is Deciduous - Bring along any colouring up tree you have to show off. It would also be great if you can give a quick chat about how you maintain and look after it, what conditions it loves etc. so we can all learn as well.
Thanks again to James and his accommodating family for hosting the Saturday workshop (and yummy shared lunch) It was great to work in such an inspiring location, and I am sure we all learnt a lot!
A carving workshop is in the planning tubes at the moment - we will let you know the time and place as soon as we confirm details.
Hope to see you all there!

Unfortunately I didn't make it to last week's meeting - the manflu almost got me, but here's a couple of pics of mine from the January meeting. It's a yamadori podocarpus totara and an ex nursery stock Fagus sylvatica - European Beech. Trunks are about 100mm dia. At the base

Hi everyone, It's that time again! :) Hope you're keeping your trees watered well - the weather is still a bit patchy out there.....
Club meeting this Thursday at 6:30 pm at the same place - 47 Aviemore Drive.
As usual, bring along your trees to work on, and some more to show. There won't be a raffle this month because Willem will be bringing along some starter bonsai trees for sale - so make sure to bring along some cash to flash.
Please note: Memberships are already due for the 2026 year (Thanks to the peoples that have already paid) It is only $50 for the whooooooole year, which is about $4.50 per person per month. Personally, I think this is a great price to have somewhere warm to hang out with cool people and have fun with small trees!
See you all Thursday evening!

P.s the image is of an old Oak on the way to Tuakau - An out of season reminder of what we are all aiming for with our Winter silhouettes (that we often lose sight of when our trees are all leafy in Summer...)

Hi everyone 😀
Tonight is EBC Club night, (6:30 start / 47 Aviemore Drive, Highland Park) so get your trees and your tools organised for a workshop. Spring is here finally, temperatures are starting to creep upwards, and growth is exploding, so that gives us lots of things to work on at the moment. I also hope you have got a good watering regime sorted, as hot windy days this time of year can catch us out!
Tree of the month is Maple as there's so much happening at the moment with this species, so make sure to bring one in if you have one. Feel free to also bring along anything else that is looking good at the moment too!
This month we'll implement a fun new activity called "Show and tell" where a couple of people who bring in trees can chat about their chosen bonsai and what they do to maintain it / special characteristics / tips and tricks etc. I'm sure we'll all learn something!
FYI James has once again generously offered to host our Christmas party, so this will be on the 6th December, not tonight. Details to come... :)
See you all there,
Kelly

Here's some pics from last night's meeting. There was a good vibe going 😀 we were all busy repotting those last things before spring sprung. Theme was shohin, or smaller sized bonsai, but who can resist a monster flowering azalea or two??

I forgot to post some pics from the August meeting.. it's a bit late, but here they are... 😀 we had a totara theme going, so they are a bit over-represented!

Good evening everybody! hope you are all keeping well 😀
Spring is definitely here now, and Winter is quickly releasing its icy grip.
Repotting should be almost finished, but you can still do a lot of your trees that are dormant or pre-bud burst.
Although the weather is still quite fickle and rainy you should definitely be starting to think about regular watering of your trees, as before you know it, there'll be long dry warm and windy Spring weather that will dry your trees out in no time!!
The meeting will be at our usual time and place - 6:30pm this Thursday 21st August, 47 Aviemore Drive.
It will be a general workshop this month, so bring along some trees to play with. I'll be repotting some trees, so you can watch and help with that if you want to also.
Theme of the month is "Shohin sized" trees (i.e. trees under 20cm tall excluding pot) , so bring them all in to share!
FYI October's theme will be Pohutukawa (any variety) if you want to start prepping these in anticipation....
In regards to the raffle, we will be moving this to every 2 months, so we will be having the next one in October.
Time is flying - November meeting will be our last one for the year, before we close down for Christmas (no meeting in December). James has once again very kindly offered to host the Nov. Christmas party at his place again - details closer to the time.
And lastly. we will be back again on the 15th January (the third Thursday) if you want to put all these dates in your calendar.
See you Thursday!
Cheers, Kelly
