2025 Year in Review: Weaving Excellence.
Beyond the Sandbox: How We Are Weaving Futures at Giraffe ELC

When you are reunited with your child at the end of the day, the true evidence of their learning is often subtle, t might be a spark of excitement in their eyes, a new concept they are eager to explain, or simply the quiet confidence of a day well spent. But while these moments are what you see on the surface, the intellectual architecture behind them is profound.

At Giraffe ELC, we don’t just watch children play; we curate environments where learning happens by design. We view every day through the dual lens of Te Whāriki, which provides the woven mat of principles for our curriculum, and Kōwhiti Whakapae, the Ministry’s latest framework for strengthening oral language, literacy, and social - emotional resilience.

We want to take you behind the scenes of three key "Projects" currently unfolding at Giraffe ELC, showing you how we turn "just playing" into world class education.

Ngā Tapuwae Kōrero: The Story Steps

You may have seen photos of our trips to the Mt Roskill Library to visit Maryanne. We call this project Ngā Tapuwae Kōrero - The Story Steps. On the surface, it looks like a fun excursion, but it is a masterclass in the Te Whāriki strand of Mana Reo (Communication).

Under the Kōwhiti Whakapae framework, literacy isn't just about reading books; it’s about reading the world. When our tamariki walk to the library, they are navigating environmental print like street signs and safety warnings. They are practicing executive function by recalling the route and managing their safety. When they sit with Maryanne, they aren't just listening; they are learning the rhythm of language, the structure of narrative, and the art of being a respectful audience. This fosters a love for pūrākau (stories) that becomes the foundation for every essay they will ever write in the future.

Te Aho Tukutuku: Weaving Futures

For our older children preparing for primary school, we have launched Te Aho Tukutuku. In Māori tradition, the tukutuku panel requires patience, pattern recognition, and structure to weave a strong whole. This project focuses on the "hard skills" of school readiness, maths and writing, but wraps them in the Te Whāriki strand of Mana Atua (Wellbeing).

Why Wellbeing? because true school readiness is about emotional resilience. When a child tackles a complex puzzle or organizes their own learning materials, they are exercising working memory and cognitive flexibility. We aren't just teaching them to count to ten; we are teaching them what to do when they get stuck at number seven. That resilience is the difference between "school prep" and true "life prep."

Whānau Tangata: The Village Project

You are the most important part of this project. Whānau Tangata is our commitment to the Mana Whenua (Belonging)strand of Te Whāriki. Research tells us that children cannot learn if they do not feel they belong. Every time your child helps "host" a community events, or shares a story about their family with the class, they are building their self concept.

This "Village Project" ensures that they understand they have a voice, that their voice matters, and that they are citizens of a community that values them. It connects the safety of home with the adventure of the wider world, ensuring that when they eventually leave our gates, they walk out not just as students, but as confident, contributing members of society.

So, the next time you open a Storypark update or listen to an excited story about their day, remember: you are not just looking at 'play.' You are witnessing the blueprints of the future.

Weaving Excellence, From Daily Play to Stewardship

A curriculum of this quality requires a strong, protective structure to thrive, which brings us to our proudest milestone of the year. We were humbled to receive the highest possible evaluation from the Education Review Office (ERO) regarding our Stewardship. They recognized our excellence in Te Whakaruruhau - Stewardship through effective governance and management.

In Māori concepts, Te Whakaruruhau refers to "the sheltering." It is the idea that strong governance provides the safety, compliance, and strategic vision that shelters the learning environment, allowing the teachers to teach and the children to thrive without worry. This recognition is a great affirmation of the "invisible work" that happens in our office: the strategic planning and rigorous self-review that ensures the foundations of Giraffe ELC are strong.

Yet, for us, this accolade is not a finish line; it is fuel. Ongoing improvement is in Team Giraffe’s blood. We use this evaluation not to rest, but as a platform to reach even higher.

As we head into the holiday season, we thank you for being part of our village, for trusting us with your most precious taonga, and for walking this path of excellence with us.

Mā te māramatanga o te wā e arahi i a tātou ki te Tau Hou e heke mai nei.
May the light/enlightenment of this season guide us into the New Year ahead.

Arohanui,

Team Giraffe ELC

What a weekend of Christmas magic at Giraffe ELC. Our centre was buzzing with giggles, music, tiny excited footsteps and a whole lot of festive joy. If you ever want to see what a happy learning community looks like, just step into Giraffe on a Saturday morning.

A big thank you to our incredible teaching team who brought the celebration to life. With thoughtful planning, warm hearts and the kind of teamwork you can feel the moment you walk in, they created a day our children will remember. And leading the charge was Seema, our centre manager, orchestrating the fun like someone who has Christmas magic in her back pocket. Every time we thought the party couldn’t run any smoother, she proved us wrong.

At Giraffe ELC, we believe learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It lives in moments of joy, community, celebration and shared experiences. As we head into 2026, we’re excited to roll out new initiatives and even richer learning opportunities for our growing community.

If you’re looking for a centre that puts children’s happiness and learning first, supported by a capable team and seven day provision, come and meet us. You’ll feel the difference the moment you walk through our doors.

Meri Kirihimete ki a koutou katoa, kia tau te hari me te koa ki runga i a koutou.
Kia haumaru ngā haerenga, kia ngahau te wā hararei ki tō koutou whānau.
Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas filled with joy, connection and safe travels.
May your holiday season be full of laughter, rest and special moments with whānau.
Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a season full of warmth, laughter and safe travels. Giraffe ELC looks forward to welcoming more families into our community in the new year.

Move over MasterChef — today our Rimu and Matai tamariki became the ultimate grill masters! The sandpit was transformed into a BBQ paradise, with the smoky goodness of a real charcoal grill drifting through the playground.

The verdict? Every single bite vanished… we fed them until the very last crumb was gone (Parents, sorry — no takeaway boxes today).

But it wasn’t just about food — it was about healthy minds, healthy bodies, and discovering new ways of cooking. The children even learnt about hāngi, reminding us that food is at the heart of every culture, and respecting traditions makes the Kai taste even better.

The best part? The tamariki loved it so much they kept chanting for more… The tamariki are now convinced that kai tastes extra delicious when cooked outdoors… especially if it comes with a bit of smoky sandpit magic. Summer is almost here, and our tamariki are clearly ready for it.

Kia ora e te whānau, Mānawatia a Matariki.

At Giraffe ELC, we came together this week to celebrate the Māori New Year through learning, reflection, and joyful connection. Across all four rooms, our tamariki embraced the spirit of Matariki with hands-on experiences grounded in mātauranga Māori.

Our day began with a harakeke-cutting ritual, where children engaged in karakia before weaving beautiful keepsakes. This was not just a creative activity, but an opportunity to honour whakapapa and the interconnectedness of people, land, and tradition.

In the kitchen, the smell of freshly made Māori bread filled the air. Tamariki collaborated to prepare a hearty vegetable soup, with each room contributing ingredients. This act of shared kai reflected the values of kotahitanga and manaakitanga—unity and care for others.

After lunch, our centre came alive with waiata and kanikani. Tamariki sang songs of the stars and danced with joyful energy, expressing themselves freely and celebrating the season of renewal.

Throughout the day, our children learned the stories behind all nine whetū of Matariki, each carrying its own special meaning. One star, Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, represents wishes, aspirations, and goals for the future. As part of our learning, each child made a wish to Hiwa-i-te-Rangi—wishing not just for themselves, but for the people they love and the world around them.

Matariki is a time to pause, remember those who came before us, and plant the seeds for the year ahead. At Giraffe, we embrace this moment to foster mauri tau—a calm, purposeful energy—as we guide our tamariki to grow not just in knowledge, but in kindness, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging.

Thank you all Kaiako at Team Giraffe and all the families who support our kaupapa. We invite you to reflect with us: what are your wishes to Hiwa-i-te-Rangi this year?

Ngā mihi nui,
Team Giraffe ELC

Parents, you seriously outdid yourselves — what a night.

Steven here, huge thanks for all came to the PD evening.

We kicked things off the Giraffe way: with some mouth-wateringly healthy kai, and from there the energy just took off.

We explored the wild jungle that is parenting emotions — and let’s be honest, it wasn’t just the kids we were talking about 😅. Sometimes the grown-ups need a little emotional regulation too (especially when you’ve stepped on LEGO... again).

From practical tips to real talk, it was a mix of:
✅ “Oh wow, that actually works!”
✅ “Wait… does my emotion to be regulated as well?”
✅ And a healthy dose of “I’m not alone — hallelujah!”

There was laughter, there were aha-moments, and maybe even a few “ouch, that truth hit hard” nods in the crowd. We even had superhero breathing in the mix (minus the cape, sadly).

The big takeaway? Emotions matter. And supporting our tamariki to feel and deal is one of the best gifts we can give them — and ourselves.

Here at Giraffe ELC, we’ve been working alongside the awesome ENGAGE team to sharpen our everyday emotional support strategies, and you’ll already see many of these woven into your child’s daily experiences with us.

But the magic happens when we team up.
What we practise here works even better when reinforced at home — so let’s keep the momentum going!

Got a curly question or a scenario you want to unpack with us? Bring it on — we’re here for all the real, raw, and ridiculous moments that come with raising emotionally awesome little humans.

Thanks again for joining us. You brought the laughs, the honesty, and the heart — and we couldn’t have asked for a better village to walk this journey with.

Our little Giraffes have officially reached ZEN MODE. 🧘‍♂️✨

Parents, you might not have noticed… but Giraffe ELC has been secretly transforming into a Zen sanctuary! 🏯✨

That’s right, While you were busy wondering why your child suddenly started saying "Namaste" before bedtime, we’ve been practicing yoga and meditation with the children on a regular basis. And now, the results are in:

✅ Inner peace unlocked (or at least, a solid 30 seconds of stillness before the wiggles return).
✅ Noise levels down – because a calm mind means fewer spontaneous dinosaur roars in the hallway. 🦖🔇
✅ Deep breaths in, deep breaths out – and yes, some extra-long inhales of the morning baking aroma. 🍪😆

Did you ever think a centre with 110 children could be quieter than your living room with just one or two? Well, next time you walk into Giraffe, take a moment to notice: the gentle scent of candle, the relaxing jazz in the background, and the shockingly peaceful atmosphere. You might even wonder… “Wait, did I just step into a spa?” 🧖‍♀️

A huge shoutout to our amazing Kaiako for leading these mindfulness sessions, turning even our tiniest tots into Zen masters in training. (And if you missed it, check out our previous post to witness the ultimate serious concentration baby face – possibly cuter than a baby Kiwi )

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the highlights from our little yogis in action. 🎥✨

With deep breaths and calming music, we embarked on a mission to find our inner peace... or at least sit still for more than 30 seconds (a true early childhood miracle! 🙌).

One thing that Giraffe ELC can claim - we are now officially the most flexible early learning centre in town 🏆😂

***** Leadership on the rise Part 2 - Babies Edition *****

At Giraffe ELC, we don’t just see babies and toddlers—we see future leaders, problem solvers, and confident little humans taking their first steps into the world of learning. 🌟👣

Today, our tiniest Giraffes in the Kōwhai and Tōtara Rooms showed bravery beyond their years, standing up, speaking up, and leading their own learning journeys. Whether it was exploring early literacy and numeracy, clapping along in support, or simply beaming with confidence, their enthusiasm was contagious (and, let’s be honest, completely adorable) 🥰🎉

🧐 Parents, take a closer look at those serious and concentrated little faces! The way they focus, absorb, and engage is not just cute—it’s admirable! Their curiosity and determination shine through, showing us that learning starts young, and confidence grows even earlier! 💡👏

Our Kaiako aren’t just teachers—they are inspirers and doers, nurturing curiosity, confidence, and initiative every step of the way. Because at Giraffe ELC, learning and play aren’t opposites—they’re best friends as we mentioned earlier in the Community Post. 🤝📚🎨

So here’s to our boldest, bravest, and tiniest future leaders—you make us proud every single day! 💛🦒👏

📢 Parents, what’s the most concentrated face your little one makes? Share below! And drop a 🦒 in the comments to cheer them on!

🎤 Public speaking at age 3? Leadership in preschool? You bet! 💡

At Giraffe ELC, we don’t just raise little learners—we raise young leaders!

Every child in our center is encouraged to speak up, take charge, and shine, whether it’s during news sharing, show and tell, or even as our adorable “Little Librarians" project at Rimu.

📢 Big voices, big confidence – Public speaking? No problem. Our tamariki are natural storytellers, and they don’t just talk—they own the stage.

📚 Little Librarians in action – Who knew managing a library could be so much fun? These little bookkeepers take their roles very seriously, and share their knowledge.

🤝 Leaders in the making – Whether it’s helping a friend, leading a group activity, or negotiating an extra turn on the slide, leadership is blended into our daily play.

But here’s the secret sauce: We sneak in early literacy and numeracy so seamlessly that learning feels like an adventure, not a chore. 🚀 Our approach makes sure kids don’t just know things—they love learning them.

🎥 This video captures some golden moments of our young leaders in action—confidence, teamwork, and a whole lot of fun. Take a peek—you might just spot the future Prime Minister in the making 👀✨

🌟 At Giraffe ELC, leadership isn't an extra—it’s in our DNA. 🌟

👇 Hit play and see for yourself! 🎬

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Our tamariki threw a party,
And now there’s glitter in our shoes. 😆

Today was all about love, laughter, and a healthy dose of chaos. Here’s how our little cupids celebrated:

💛 Kōwhai Room – Balloon sweathearts
Our tiniest cuties worked hard (well… as hard as a baby can) to hold their special balloons with sweet messages. Some hugged them, they held balloons with heartfelt messages—because even the littlest hands can share BIG love.

💚 Totara Room – The Mini Masterchefs
These talented tamariki didn’t just craft adorable heart-shaped cards; they also put on their chef hats and baked up some sweet Valentine’s treats! Parents, if your little one hands you a cookie today, smile, take a bite, and it’s the best thing you’ve ever tasted. 😉

💙 Rimu Room – The Heart-Makers
A day of creativity, fun, and an epic parachute game ended with the tamariki doing something truly special… they formed a giant love heart together at the end of the video 💖 Ka pai, Rimu tamariki—you made our hearts melt.

❤️ Matai Room – The Love Olympics
Who knew Valentine’s Day could get this competitive?! From bag jumping to tug-of-war, the energy levels were through the roof. The teamwork, the determination, the intense game faces—future Olympians, we see you. 🏆 (Also, we’re pretty sure a rematch has already been scheduled for next year. 😆)

💖 A BIG THANK YOU to all our amazing tamariki and Kaiako for making today so special! And a special shoutout to Rimu Room for the beautiful love heart at the end of the video—it was the perfect way to wrap up the day ❤️

In summary: Love was shared. Laughter echoed through the halls. Teachers might need a nap. 😴

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Giraffe ELC ❤️

Today, our little athletes took on their first-ever Playball session, and wow – what a blast. 🚀 From hopping through hoops to mastering some serious coordination moves, the little giraffes gave it their all with determination, laughter, and a little bit of “oops, I missed that hoop” moments! 😂

💪 What did we see?

✔️ Epic jumping, balancing, and dodging – future Common Wealth athletes in the making 🏆
✔️ Loads of teamwork and leadership – because real champions lift each other up 🤝
✔️ The cutest game faces ever – some serious Playball intensity going on 🏀🔥

Huge shoutout to our amazing coaches and follow Kaiako at Giraffe ELC for making it so engaging and exciting – and to our little ones for showing up ready to roll, jump, and giggle their way through it all 😆

🌳🎨🍎 Totara's Great Park Adventure! 🍎🎨🌳

Today, our awesome Totara tamariki went on a grand expedition to the local park! 🚀✨ There, they did what all great explorers do—had a delicious morning tea, sang their hearts out, and created masterpieces of art that could rival the Mona Lisa (or at least make it onto our fridge!).

But wait—there's more! 📚 Our little word wizards also discovered some new words for their early literacy journey, proving once again that learning is best served with a side of sunshine and snacks. 🌞🍞

The pride on their faces as they showed off their artwork? Absolutely priceless. 🖼️💛 And we, as their Kaiako, couldn’t be prouder!

A huge shout-out to our adventurous artists and singers—keep up the fantastic mahi! 🦒💚
