2025 Year in Review: Weaving Excellence.
Beyond the Sandbox: How We Are Weaving Futures at Giraffe ELC
When you are reunited with your child at the end of the day, the true evidence of their learning is often subtle, t might be a spark of excitement in their eyes, a new concept they are eager to explain, or simply the quiet confidence of a day well spent. But while these moments are what you see on the surface, the intellectual architecture behind them is profound.
At Giraffe ELC, we don’t just watch children play; we curate environments where learning happens by design. We view every day through the dual lens of Te Whāriki, which provides the woven mat of principles for our curriculum, and Kōwhiti Whakapae, the Ministry’s latest framework for strengthening oral language, literacy, and social - emotional resilience.
We want to take you behind the scenes of three key "Projects" currently unfolding at Giraffe ELC, showing you how we turn "just playing" into world class education.
Ngā Tapuwae Kōrero: The Story Steps
You may have seen photos of our trips to the Mt Roskill Library to visit Maryanne. We call this project Ngā Tapuwae Kōrero - The Story Steps. On the surface, it looks like a fun excursion, but it is a masterclass in the Te Whāriki strand of Mana Reo (Communication).
Under the Kōwhiti Whakapae framework, literacy isn't just about reading books; it’s about reading the world. When our tamariki walk to the library, they are navigating environmental print like street signs and safety warnings. They are practicing executive function by recalling the route and managing their safety. When they sit with Maryanne, they aren't just listening; they are learning the rhythm of language, the structure of narrative, and the art of being a respectful audience. This fosters a love for pūrākau (stories) that becomes the foundation for every essay they will ever write in the future.
Te Aho Tukutuku: Weaving Futures
For our older children preparing for primary school, we have launched Te Aho Tukutuku. In Māori tradition, the tukutuku panel requires patience, pattern recognition, and structure to weave a strong whole. This project focuses on the "hard skills" of school readiness, maths and writing, but wraps them in the Te Whāriki strand of Mana Atua (Wellbeing).
Why Wellbeing? because true school readiness is about emotional resilience. When a child tackles a complex puzzle or organizes their own learning materials, they are exercising working memory and cognitive flexibility. We aren't just teaching them to count to ten; we are teaching them what to do when they get stuck at number seven. That resilience is the difference between "school prep" and true "life prep."
Whānau Tangata: The Village Project
You are the most important part of this project. Whānau Tangata is our commitment to the Mana Whenua (Belonging)strand of Te Whāriki. Research tells us that children cannot learn if they do not feel they belong. Every time your child helps "host" a community events, or shares a story about their family with the class, they are building their self concept.
This "Village Project" ensures that they understand they have a voice, that their voice matters, and that they are citizens of a community that values them. It connects the safety of home with the adventure of the wider world, ensuring that when they eventually leave our gates, they walk out not just as students, but as confident, contributing members of society.
So, the next time you open a Storypark update or listen to an excited story about their day, remember: you are not just looking at 'play.' You are witnessing the blueprints of the future.
Weaving Excellence, From Daily Play to Stewardship
A curriculum of this quality requires a strong, protective structure to thrive, which brings us to our proudest milestone of the year. We were humbled to receive the highest possible evaluation from the Education Review Office (ERO) regarding our Stewardship. They recognized our excellence in Te Whakaruruhau - Stewardship through effective governance and management.
In Māori concepts, Te Whakaruruhau refers to "the sheltering." It is the idea that strong governance provides the safety, compliance, and strategic vision that shelters the learning environment, allowing the teachers to teach and the children to thrive without worry. This recognition is a great affirmation of the "invisible work" that happens in our office: the strategic planning and rigorous self-review that ensures the foundations of Giraffe ELC are strong.
Yet, for us, this accolade is not a finish line; it is fuel. Ongoing improvement is in Team Giraffe’s blood. We use this evaluation not to rest, but as a platform to reach even higher.
As we head into the holiday season, we thank you for being part of our village, for trusting us with your most precious taonga, and for walking this path of excellence with us.
Mā te māramatanga o te wā e arahi i a tātou ki te Tau Hou e heke mai nei.
May the light/enlightenment of this season guide us into the New Year ahead.
Arohanui,
Team Giraffe ELC
