Filipino Language Week ( Dress Up Day)

Language competency requirements :: Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand 26/10/2024

Hi everyone! For those who have been messaging me about how to become a licensed teacher in New Zealand, here are the steps based on my experience. I can’t respond individually as I’m quite busy, so I hope this helps!

Step 1: Apply for an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) - 700 NZD
Apply for IQA

Documents Required:

Passport
Transcript of Records (ToR) for your Bachelor's Degree
Transcript of Records (ToR) for your Master's Degree (if applicable; if not, that’s fine)
Diplomas for both your Bachelor's and Master's
Practicum Certificate
Course Descriptions (only if your ToR lists subject codes)

Note: All documents must be in English; if not, they need to be translated.

Step 2: English Proficiency Test
Take the PTE (minimum score of 65 in all skills) or IELTS (minimum Level 7).
Language Competency Requirements

Once you receive your IQA result confirming Level 7 for your Bachelor’s or Levels 8/9 for your Master’s, you can schedule your English test. Make sure to take time to prepare for your chosen test; I took the PTE and was fortunate to pass.

Step 3: Teacher Registration
Register as a Teacher

Application Website: Create an Education Sector Logon (ESL)

Documents Required:

1st Set: Personal Details

Proof of Identity (Notarized)
NBI (Certified)
2nd Set: Teaching Qualifications

Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Diplomas (Certified)
NZQA (Original file - do not change the file name)
Practicum Certificate
CV
Evidence of Teaching Experience (e.g., recent observations, professional development, reference letters - Certified)
Supervised Teaching Experience (Certified)
Appraisal
Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) documents (Certified)
3rd Set: Language Competency

PTE results
Declarations & Final Steps:

Application Type: Practising Certificate (overseas) - 564.37 NZD
Step 4: Job Hunting
Education Vacancies

Things to Keep in Mind:

1. I received my license in 2021 but started relief work three months after giving birth in February 2022. My visa situation was fine since I had a partnership work visa.
2. Job hunting can be tough and exhausting; there were times I questioned whether the effort was worth it.
3. Thankfully, I found a permanent job. Remember, patience is key, and trust that the right opportunity will come. Have faith in the process!
For anyone considering this path or feeling discouraged, believe in yourself! With passion and dedication, success is within reach.

Note: I have 7.5 years of teaching experience overseas and was employed in the Department of Education. For those without teaching experience, there are also pathways available. Good luck to all!
