The first kanji, 友（とも／ゆう）, expresses the idea of friendship or a friend. It appears in useful words such as:

🔹 友人（ゆうじん）— friend; a slightly more formal expression
🔹 親友（しんゆう）— close friend or best friend
🔹 友情（ゆうじょう）— friendship
友だち may also be written completely in kanji as 友達. However, beginners frequently see the mixed form 友だち, in which 友 is written in kanji and だち is written in hiragana.
Although 達 can sometimes indicate a group of people, 友だち can refer to either one friend or friends in general. The number is usually understood from the surrounding context.

🧠 IMPORTANT PARTICLE PATTERNS
🔹 友だちと — with a friend
友だちと話します。
I talk with my friend.
🔹 友だちに — to a friend or with a friend, depending on the verb
友だちに電話します。
I call my friend.
🔹 友だちの — a friend’s
これは友だちの本です。
This is my friend’s book.
🔹 友だちが — a friend as the subject
友だちが来ます。
My friend is coming.
🔹 友だちを — friend as the object of certain actions
駅で友だちを待ちます。
I wait for my friend at the station.
❌ WHY ARE THE OTHER OPTIONS INCORRECT?
1️⃣ 右だち is incorrect.
右（みぎ）means “right” or “right-hand side.” It is an important directional kanji, but combining it with だち does not create the Japanese word for friend.
Example:
右に曲がってください。
Migi ni magatte kudasai.
Please turn right.
2️⃣ 名だち is also incorrect.
名（な／めい）means “name,” “reputation” or “fame,” depending on the word. 名だち is not the standard Japanese word for friend.
Examples:
名前（なまえ）— name
有名（ゆうめい）— famous
名刺（めいし）— business card
The correct spelling is:
