MAJOR AUSTRALIA VISA UPDATE:
No More Dependents!!
Overview:
The Australian Government has formally announced targeted policy updates to streamline net overseas migration and ensure visa integrity. While these rules tighten secondary entries and onshore transfers, Australia remains fully open, welcoming, and prioritizing genuine, high-quality international students.
Here is the essential briefing for your counseling teams and active leads:
1. Dependent Visa Restrictions
The Update: Secondary family applicants will be restricted across most standard student visa streams to curb unnecessary migration pressures.
• Exemptions & Post-Graduate Research : Higher Degree by Research candidates (Masters by Research and PhD programs) remain eligible to bring dependents, subject to standard visa criteria.
• Impact for Standard Applicants: Students applying (coursework) programs should prepare to submit single applications, as accompanying family members may no longer be eligible on standard secondary visas.
2. Onshore Course Changes & Visa Integrity
• The Update: The Department is enforcing strict measures against "visa hopping" and unapproved academic downgrades.
• New Requirement: Students seeking to change courses after arrival—particularly those moving to a lower qualification level (e.g., Master’s to VET/Diploma)—must apply for a new Student Visa before transferring.
• Genuine Student (GS) Assessment: Every new onshore application will undergo a rigorous Genuine Student (GS) test. Course changes that do not demonstrate a clear, logical progression toward the student's career goals carry a high risk of refusal or visa cancellation.
Core Message: Australia Remains Open to Quality Students
These reforms are designed to protect the value of an Australian qualification and prioritize genuine learners. Australia continues to offer world-class education, post-study work opportunities, and fast-track processing for compliant institutions and quality applicants.
