🇮🇩🇮🇩Indonesia Changed their Capital ☺️
Indonesia is indeed changing its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, located on the island of Borneo in East Kalimantan. This move was announced by President Joko Widodo in 2019, citing concerns over Jakarta's overpopulation, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation, particularly the city's sinking due to over-extraction of groundwater.
*Reasons for the Move:*
- *Environmental Concerns*: Jakarta is prone to flooding and is sinking rapidly, with some areas below sea level.
- *Overpopulation*: Jakarta is overcrowded, with a high population density and inadequate infrastructure.
- *Developmental Inequality*: The move aims to reduce developmental disparities between Java and other islands in Indonesia.
*Nusantara: The New Capital*
- *Location*: East Kalimantan, Borneo
- *Development*: The city is being built in five phases, with a projected completion date of 2045, coinciding with Indonesia's centennial anniversary.
- *Investment*: The project is estimated to cost around $32.7 billion (Rp466 trillion), with the government covering 19% of the cost and the rest coming from public-private partnerships and direct investment.
- *Features*: Nusantara is designed to be a sustainable city, with 80% of transportation supported by public transport, cycling, or walking, and 10% of its area dedicated to food production
*Current Status*
- *Construction*: The first phase of construction is reportedly 80% complete, with the government planning to inaugurate the city on August 17, 2024, although the move was slightly delayed.
- *Relocation*: Over 10,000 civil servants are expected to move to Nusantara in September 2024, with the government providing special allowances and official apartments.
